ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
LYALL BAY FATALITY. . Yesterday Dr. M'Arthur, S.M., held au inquiry into the circumstances attending the death of Robert Dobson, who was drowned at Lyall Day beach on Sunday. Ldward Levy, captain of the Lvall ttav Surf Club, gave evidence (hat he and Dobson had been bathing in (hree or four feet of water. He left Dobson for about three minutes, but, after hearing cries, returned to Dobson, who appeared to be in difficulties. Witness signalled to tho shore for help, and did all that he could to get him to safety. Dobson apparently lost his presenco of mind when a breaker went over them, but, when spoken to, regained composure. He, however, again lost coolness, and clutched witness, and they both went down in about eight feet of ■ water. Once more they went under, and this tune Dobson did not rise. Witness dived repeatedly for him, but did not find him. He thought that, had the signal for help been answered, Dobson \° i ! J ave bcon savc<l . but he did not think that tho signal had been seen. The verdict was "accidentally drowned. The coroner said that thanks were due'to Mr. Levy for his pluckv attempt at rescue. The coroner asked the City Solicitor.if it would not be possible to have a flag flying when the tide was ebbing, in order to warn bathers. The City Solicitor promised to bring tho matter before the City Council. .KNOCKED DOWN BY CAR, ' Mr. Henry Richard Tolloy, formerly of the firm of Cedcrholm and Tolloy, Manners- Street, was knocked down by a tram ear in Willis Street yesterday. At the time Mr. Tolley.'who is short-sighted, was crossng the street' as two ears .were approaching each other, and apparently'he did not see tho coining along, for it is understood that he walked right into it, the result being that he was knocked down. Mr. Tolley was immediately conveyed to a chemist's shop in the vicinity, and was there found to be suffering from wounds in the head and concussion. Subsenuentlv he. was conveyed to the hospital.:- Ho is progressing favourably. (By Tclegraph-T-Press Association.} Auckland, December 12. John Macfnrlane, formerly manager for the Hdkianga Sawmilling Co. at Kohukohu, was found .drowned in the Waihau River to-day.
