PALMERSTOn HIGH SCHOOL.
■There wis n large attendance at the -Municipal Hall on Tuesday evening, when the prize-giving ceremony in connection witli the Palmerston High School fool, place. I ho chairman of (he Board of Governors (Mr. W. 11. Collingwood) presulctl, and in a happy speech, gave a resume of the work of the par. Mr. W. Gray, iho first rector of the school, was the principal speaker, and delivered a very interesting af m, * on " lc advantages of education. Iho rector's report was as follows:~ 1 have the honour to present, this the tenth animal report of (he Pnlinorston -North High School. Uoll: The roll numbers ior the three terms compared with those of last year are as follow:— 1911. 1910. Boys. Girls. Tl. Tl. First term 129 77 200 192 Second term 12! 73 1!U ]85 Third term 11l (S9 ]S3 , 180 Of the IS!) at present on the roll 00 have finished their lirst year at school, +3 their second. 2"> (heir third, 10 their fourth, and 10 their fifth and sixth. Holders of junior free places number 125, and senior free places number 40. Attendance: Tile average for the year is ISO, mi increase of 7 on last vear's number. The average attendances for (he past ten years have been as follow:—97, j 129, 121, 151, llti, 127, 1;1S. I,jU. 17:1, ISO. j College llniise: The number of boarders : has been 2:1, with an average of 21. DurI ing I he year the House has been considerably enlarged, and has now accommodation for over 30 buard-rs. Work: This goes on steadily from'the beginning to the end of the year. Under the better eruditions of the new building (lie results Imve la'im more satisfactory. The .-chmil was inspected by Dr. Anderson i and Mr. Giil. who reported that th- schoil . was well organised, and that a a good spirit of in-ilu-try prevailed, and that, though the humanities were not neglected, the practical side of the work took a prominant place in the school course. Last year's successes included one Senior National JsdiolarsJrJp, two. first year's terms,
eight matriculation passes, two teachers' I) examination, and two education senior' board scholarships. This year wo expeel our results to be as good if not; liellor. I sliouhMike to emphasise that, though Latin and French are both taught in the school, and taught very sueces-lully as our results show, still no one is compelled lo lake either of these languages. Those who intend to stay only a short timo at the school arc allowed to lake more practical subjects, Hook-keeping and shorthand arc given to those who wish to take up a commercial course, while an agricultural course has boon arranged for those going on the land. This course has (his year been made much wider, and now includes besides English and mathematics, chemistry, botany, experimental agriculture, milk and milk-testing, wool-classing, and sheep-shearing. Wc hope still further to improve this course, as n special teacher has just been appointed for this branch. . Physical Training—Our two cadet companies arc doing good work under Captains Foole and Murray. A very successful camp was held (luring the first term. Vnder the new Act we shall have to put in n little more time at, drill, but the greater part will take tho form of physical training lather than military training.
