Mr. A. ISiss, of the Wellington firm of Bndham and Biss, returned liy the Moernki yesterday from a. business trip to Sydney.
The passengers from Sydney yesterday by tin? Mooraki included Mr. Gerald T. Haker. of .Melbourne (chairman of the Colonial Mutual .Life Office) and _ Mr. Adam C!. Melville (sub-manager of the society in Melbourne). Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Melville accompany their husbands. The party will lour Hit* Dominion.
iMr. H. M. Rice, of Sydney, a-member of the Australian team which is to compete .in.-, the Davis Cnn contest at Obristrlinn'h, arrived by the Moeraki yesterday, nnd later left by tho steamer for LyHelton. ■
The death of Mr. A. It. V. Lodder, of Upper Willis Street, Wellington took placojlast night, after a short illness. Mr. Lodder, in partnership with Mr. Orr, was for many years proprietor and licensed" of tho City Buffcl Hotel in Lambton' Quay. Ho was also proprietor for a number of years of the Bellovue Gardens, Lower Hull. A few weeks ago he filtered into partnership with Mr. .T. M'M.ahon in a moving picture enterprise at Auckland. -Mr. Lodder returned from that city only a few days ago. Deceased was 59 years of age.

Sir John Kirk, representing tho Loudon Ragged Schools' Union and the Shaftsbury Home, will arrivo from the south by the Maori on Friday morning, and will bo given a civic reception by the Mayor at the Town Hall at 10.30 a.m. All interested are invited to be present. 011 Sunday evening Sir John Kirk will preach at St. John's Church.
Mr. Donald Duncan, senior hulk mm for the Union S.S. Co.. returned from an eleven month'.' trip to the United Kingdom and America by the Moeraki yesterday. Whilst absent lie visited all the principal seaports of England, and Scotland and al.-o New York and some of (he Canadian ports, during which he made a special study of the handling of coal. After visiting America lie returned to England, and journeyed from Glasgow to Sydney by the Tahiti, which he described as a very fine steamer, admirably adapted for the San Francisco service.
The Rev. J. E. Watts-Ditchfield, vicar of .St. James-the-Less, Bethnal Green, London, received from tho Australian branch of tho Church of England Men's Society a pressing invitation to visit Australia next year on a mission to men. The invitation was most warmly endorsed by tho Primate of Australia, Dr. Wright, and was cordially supported by the homo executive of the O.K.M.S. Mr. WattsDitchfield has accepted the invitation, and the Bishop of London having expressed his readiness to grant him leave of absence for the purpose, ie expects to leave England in March next, and to be absent for six months.
At a meeting of the Wanganni Education Board yesterday, Mr. W. A. Armour, M.A., 31.5 c., present assistant master of the Otago Boys' High School, was appointed principal of Wanganui Technical College. There wero twenty-five applicants from all parts of tho Dominion (states a Press Association telegram).
The Rev. A. Murray has intimated his desiie to resign the charge of St. AnPresbyterian Church, Auckland, with the object of taking over tho charge of the Somerville Memorial Church, Kemuera.
