NEED FOR MORE CLERGY.
■ ♦ REMARKS BY BTSHOP CROSSLI3Y. (Bj Telccrarh.-SDocial CorrcEDondcnt.l Auckland, November 28. Having completed nil extended lour of the Jving Country, tho Anglican, Bishop of Auckland (Dr. Crossley) is still more convinccd than ever of the need for more clergymen working in the back-blocks. "In my address to Synod," said the Bishop, speaking to a "Herald" representative yesterday, "1 drew, attention to tho overwhelming need for additional clergy, and stated that I could placo 21 men if I had them. As a result of my visit to tho King Country, I am convinced that I could increaso that number by four if J only had them and the means. One of my clergy there showed me a touching letter from a settler. Ho had called on tho settler, but unfortunately found that both ho and his vrifo were away from home. The settler, in writing, expressing his deep regret at having missed tho clergyman's visit, stated that he had been seven years'out from Homo settled there, and during the ■whole of that timo ho had never seen tho faeo of a clergyman. He asked pitcously could the Church do nothing to help these lonely pioneers in tho way of providing an occasional service to cheer and inspiro them in their ■work? I am surprised with the kindness and tho devotion of our clergy to our work in that district. Everywhere I received from tho people a most cordial and encouraging welcome, not by any means confined to the people of my own Church."
