THE TURF.

NOTES AND COMMENTS, " [Br 'Giescob.] Great interest will be taken in Ihe il"7 Wr-ion "f the ' wniglit-for-agß event a r l-'eildiil" 10-dnv, as tho field will be coms po-ed o"f a, trio nf two-year-olds who arc ? nil ill tho first flight'.. Lord SmiH. Kan- " MJii, and Soa Hnglo will bo runner, ami promise to make the raro worth sei- - ing. Wheu Auluninus passed 1 l 1T0 "o. 1 r here on Saturday it was very nohceolile that lie was much oil tho big side, and 3 plainly had not flono much work since the Kireartin meeting. Tins being jhe 3 case, it. will come as no surprise to mid 5 him defealed to-day, though, on the oilier i hand, his trainer had Ihp rendition to work upon, and mnv havo succeeded in - getting in two or Ihreo Inst gallop>. - Tln'it', of course, would work a liig mi- ■ proii'inent in th" Chokeboro colt, hrmengnrde litis not !>een idle on Iho Awnpunt i trucks, and those who snw her work on Snturilav morning arguo tniit. Willi aul tumnus'a little Ixickwnrd. the chnnees ot ' llighden filly nro exceedingly good. Then there is iMdanio (u bo reckoned [ with. Mr. Lowry's filly beat, Ant.imnus in the Welcome Stakes, bnL wis in tuni ' beaten bv a narrow margin by Winning I Wav. A'litumiuis subsequently accounted for'tho black filly, nnd. tit nnd well, should do so again. Nnnnu'ii rail a gooi race in (ho Electric Plate, but stopped towards the finish. To-day s raco is mer a furlong further which does not augur well for tho chances of the old horso defeating tho two-year-olds. Lord !->oiilt can ba expoctod. to nut up a good race, but as the two-vear-olds have such nn ail* vantage in 'tho weights,, their chnnees look better than those ot tho older dtvisiou. Fields at Feilding to-day are of more than the average size, and matters do not augur well lor backers. If an inauspicious commencement is made, the totalisator turn-over may bo to suffer, as, in tho big entry ot unknowns" in the roransi [Vial Plate, nn event for annrentices, onckers are likely to fight shy "of tho machine, (joldfinder will probably see a short pneo m tho si. Andrew's Handicap, with Avarice and Epsom Lass also well backed. In the Spring Hurdles, tho local horse, Kouuiac, who will have Young's services, will no doubt bo the public choice, but Eurpco has repeatedly given splendid wniuing exhibitions in tho hack class, and it would not be surprising if he were to bring about the aownfall of tho topweight. The remaining events appear to he quite open, and the backer who can hold his own will do well. Big fields are engaged at the Takapuna meeting to-day, but "class ' is not well represented. Sir A.rtegal and Lady Dot appear to be the favourite double for the St. Andrew's and Cheltenham Handicaps. Seaman, who was successfully operated on for respiratory trouble, is_ among the acceptors for tho Ivitiwea Welter Handicap at Feilding this afternoon. A severe loss has been sustained by A. Attwood, the well-known trainor, in tho death of tho mare Miss King. She had foaled a filly only a week before her death, and was being taken to the stallion Ghoorka when she collapsed (says an exchange). Miss King had a chequered career, for, although sho was pretty successful at different meetings hereabouts, she was Jas. M'Aleer's mount wheu that jockey received fatal injuries in the Westmero Hurdles at Wanganui in 1005, and since she had been to tho stiul tho only colt that sho foaled did not live. Sho has, however, left a couple of classy filly foals by Advance. H. King, formerly private trainer for Mr. D. Buick and later for Mr. M'Manaway, proposes to take over the stable recently run by H. Jackson at Feilding. An exchange says that the filly by Campfire from Lady Menschikoff's dam in Mr. L. Pascall's stable, at Palmerston North, has been named Lady Nolan from tho fact that Lord Nolan, won the Melbourne Cup on the day she was foaled. Koran has quite recovered from tho recent injury to his eyo, caused by a stone from' a catapult, nnd is a likely starter in tho HacS: Hurdles at Feilding to-day. Black Northern, who won a number of hurdle races in Auckland last year, is one of the candidates engaged in tho Tiri Hurdles this afternoon at the Takapuna meeting. , . , Nominations for all events except tho Trial Stakes of the Spring meeting of the Masterton Racing Club close with the secretary on Friday, December 1. Particulars concerning tho Auckland Racing Club's Summer meeting are advertised in another column in this issue.
