SPORTS PROTECTION LEAGUE.
ITS OBJECTS EXPLAINED. Illy Tolegrap'ti.-Prcss Association.! Dunedin, November 25. The first general meeting of the New Zealand Sports Protection League was hold last evening, (he Mayor (Mr., Burnett) presiding. About two dozen gentlemen were present. Mr. Pnape, secretary of the league, addressed I he'meeting. He pointed out that the aim of (ho league was merely defensive. It was not run in connection with (ho liquor trade. Ho also said (ho league was non-political; its main object was to promote the retention of the (olaiisator. The intention of the league was not to do anything on Sundays that would bo repugnant to those who went (o church, but everv man who worked six days wonted u little recreation, and was quite justified in acting according to his conscience. Mr. Pnape staled ) that the league had ten thousand members in Hawko's Bay, eight thousand in Canterbury, and a similar number in I Wellington, three thousand in Dunedin, and live thousand in Southland. Officebearers were elected as follow:—President, Sir G. M'Lean; vice-presidents, Messrs. L. Wogan and P. Millar: committee, Messrs. S. S. Mvers, C. G. Wilson, G. L. i Ilobbs, H. Harris, and P. Martin.
