GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES' GRIEVANCES.
Sir,—ln reference to the enclosed l»tter, which appeared in your columns of Tuesday last, a mass meeting was called 01 all trades and calling employed at the Government Public Works Dopartment workshops, when the following resolution was moved and carried unanimously :— I hat this meeting of Public Works Department employees emphatically repudiate all knowledge of, and connection with, the letter appearing in The Dojiinrcw newspaper over a signahiie intimating it was one of the employees writing " l a i eo P, y of the 1 resolution to be sent to tho paper publishing the letter." inns, sir, you will at onco recognise that your correspondent either had no authority to speak for the employees or else he was someone who had 110 knowledge of what ho wrote about, and therefore must have written the letter with malice prepense." Trusting you will give this denial the. publicity you gavo the letter.-I am, etc., H. WARNER, Mover of the resolution. Wellington, November 24, 1911, [Enclosure] Sir,—lf the Reform candidates are elected to Parliament I hope they will try t<l remove some of the unfuir conditions under which low-salaried men are at present working in the public workshops, Lambton Quay. These men are paying, in some cases, six shillings and sixpence to the superannuation fund per week, and have not had any rise in fay for years, yet their officers in charge aro receiving good salaries and manv of them hnvo just received good rises; but as usual the low-paid men are not worthy of notice, fcomo of tho men have , a service of over [bh years, and are also refused annual holiday leave, while the officers and clerks can get holiday leave. Many firiue outside, for instance, tho Harbour Board, receive a mouth's leave on nay. Just fancy a man paying 6s. 6d.. nor week to the superannuation and retiring at Go with <i pension, in some cases, of 15s. per week! How long will many of them live to draw a pension? While the officers receiving high salaries retire- with from .£2OO ro JUOO per annum. No wonder many of the workers aro clamouring for a change of Government!—l am, etc., A GOVERNMENT WORKER. [Perhaps Mr. H. Warner is right. But is it likely that the employees called together under such circumstances would venture to vote against the motion ?] '
