COMPENSATE CASES.
A DISPUTED ENGAGEMENT. (By Telecranh.-Preßs Association 1 Dunedin, November 19. In the Arbitration Court to-day, Norman Campbell and Agnes ■ Campbell, of Janefield, near Mosgiel, claimed .£273 as compensation as partial defendants of their son Jamos, who was killed on March 7 by an accident at Millerton whilo in tho employ of the AVcstport Coal Company. Decision was reserved. Edward Lawrie claimed' JC26 10s, 6d. compensation from John Wnldie, slaughterman, for an accident on March 29 whereby liis ()lb.p>v, v was, fractured and other injuries sustained through falling oft a ladder. For the plaintiff it was claimed that the accident occurred on the third day of his employment. Tho defence.. was that plaintiff u'as not engaged, and that lie was helping defendant s son and other slaughtermen with tho object of securing an engagement. Defendant admitted that ho 'gave plaintiff 2s. Gd., and saw his son lend him 10s. It was admitted that defendant's son usually had an assistant, but that at the time of ttio accident he had none. The Court held that plaintiff was working for defendant, and awarded him £20 with costs (£1 75.), witnesses' expenses, and disbursements.
