SOCIAL, AND PERSONAL.

An Innovation. According to the writer of "Education Notes" in the "New Zealand Herald, it is rumoured that a proposal will shortly bo mado to appoint a woman school inspector, on the ground apparently that ns must of the teachers in the Auckland district, as elsewhere, are women, they should have a representative on. the inspectorate. It is also urged that a woman is needed to inspect the sewing. It mav be admitted that there is something in the latter argument; the ordinary school inspector, who is supposed to be as nearly omniscient as anv human being can well be, is not much better qualified than most other men to pronounce upon the merits of a long seam or a hem. Whether it is worth while to appoint a woman inspector on account of the sewing alone is for tho Auckland Education Board to settle. There will be no great grief among the woman teachers if they decide not to do so, for though the teachers, in meeting assembled, supported the proposal, it is understood that privately some of them at least are strongly opposed to it.
