HUTT ELECTORAL ROLL.
A DEPARTMENTAL INQUIRY. Serious complaints have been made eonccTiihijr the completion of the rolls in Clio Unit electorate, and a Departmental inquiry has been held. The matter was taken up by the No-License League on behalf of which the Rev. A. .]. Seamen made a formal complaint' to the Chief Electoral Officer (Mr. ]■'. W. Mansfield). Charges wcro formulated by Mr. Seamen, alleging that names had been wrongfully iml. on the roll, information proving (he disqualifications of the residents being at; one time in the hands of Hie I'cgislrar; that names had been wrongfully left off (he. roll j that there were many minor errors in the printing of tho roll which should have been corrected in tho proofs by the Regislrar, and that scmo of those .had the effect of disfranchising tho electors concerned; (hat an enrolment form duly signed and witnessed and received by a representative of the Registrars office had gene astrov; that an attendant at the Registrar's office had been fniiilj : that in general the business of the Registrar's oliice was carried on in an unbusinesslike manner. The inquiry, which was not open to the press, was held last JYidav, and on the jollowing day Mr. Mansfield forwarded his report to the Prime Minister, who Had lett on Vriday evening for the south. ft is stated that the delected errors affected only eight persons and will bo corrected by striking off incorrectly entered names, or by adding names to the supplementary roll which is now in cour=o or preparation.
