f. FALL FROM A ROOF. (By Telegraph.—Press Association 1 Christchurch, October 30. George Saunders, a widower, aged CO, was killed at Hornby oil Saturday by a fall from the roof of a shed whicli ho was repairing. His neck was broken. CAUGIIT IX THE SPOKES. Nelson, Octobcr 30. John. Lock, an expressman, was thrown from his van on Saturday owing to the horso bolting. Olio of his legs was caught in the spokes of the wheel and was badlybroken. Tho limb will probably have to be amputated. OLD SETTLER'S DEATH. Woodvillc, October 30. James Barkwith, a very old resident, died very suddenly oh Saturday night at 11 o'clock. Jle ivas only ill about half an hour. Deteased lived for illi years here, and was (>;! years of age. BLAZIXG TAR. Auckland, October 30. At tho City Council yards (bis morning a quantity of tar Ixiilcd over, and a man, John Mulverhill, was smothered with blazing tar. 'the blaze was quickly extinguished, but MulverhilFs injuries"were serious, necessitating his removal to tho hospital. INFANT IN HAIXING STREET. Tho inquest concerning the death of a baby, which was found in Haining Street on September 7, was resinned yesterday by Dr. M'Arthur, S.M. The police offered no further evidence, and a verdict ot louud dead was returned. A LITTLE HOY'S DEATH. (By TeJesrrapk.—Sroeial Correspondent.) Palmerston North, October 30. The body of the little boy, Carl Dufresne, who was drowned in the Mangaone stream on Saturday last, was found under the railway bridge at Awopuni this morning, about three miles below the scene of the accident. The lwdy was discovered by Mr. David Stevens, caretaker of the Awapuni- racecourse. At the inquest, which was held by Mr. A. D. Thomson, S.M., District Coroner, Alfred Henry Strawbridge related that; he, his brother David, the deceased, and a younger boy, Dufresne, went to the Mangaone stream to play in the sand. They took oil' their boots, but di dnot go in to swim, as the stream was in llood. After they had been walking in the water for a while, all except the deceased returned to whero they had been playing in tho sand, some distance from the water. Carl said ho was going to paddle a little longer. They left him about a chain away, but could not see him because he was below tho bank. They did not hear anyone call out or fall in iho water. Alter playing for about live minutes they were about to return home, and went down to the stream to seo where Carl was. They found his pants on the side of the bank. They walked down stream to look for "him, and saw his head above the water. He was floating down tho stream. Witness was not able to get hold of him. The boys then wont to Mrs. Dufresno's and informed her of the mishap. A verdict of accidental drowning was returned. INJURED AT KING'S WHARF. Walter Usmar, tally clork in the employment of tho Wellington Harbour Board, met with an accident in No. 2 Shed, King's Wharf, yesterday afternoon. Ono of Messrs. Keir and Co. s carts was backing into the shed and _ caught him against a packing-case, injuring his back, no was attended to by Dr. Henry and afterwards convoyed to his homo at Seatoun. FOUNDRY APPRENTICE INJURED. Dunedin, October 30. In the engineering shop of the Maori ironworks at Port Chalmers this forenoon, I'hilip Middlediloh, an apprentice, was shifting some blocks, when ho was accidentally caught in tho bolting-of the machinery. He was carried round several times before the machinery was brought to a standstill. Both his legs wore broken below the knee. Tho injured lad, who is about twenty years of age, was sent to the Dunedin Hospital. COLLAPSED SUDDENLY. DunEdin. October !)i). A sudden death took place on Saturday evening, when Mrs. Eveline Emma Kerr, aged St, relict of the late Mr. Andrew Geddes Kerr, accountant, expired while reading a newspaper. At (lie inquest, bold this morning. Evelyn Kerr, one of deceased's daughters, stated tii-it. just prior to her mother falling off her chair wli-n reading the paper, she had told witness that she was fired, and would have to go to bed. Dr. Evans stated Ihat he had come to the conclusion Ihat dealh was duo to heart, failure, following on elTnsion of blood liehind the heart. A verdict was returned in accordance with tho medical testimony.
