There ' was no restraint as to the percentage of proof spirit, and the door was open to great abuse. Dunedin, October 24. A four-roomed houso at St. Hrfier's Court, Cavcrsham Rise, owned and occupied by Mr. G. A. Cassidy, was burnt down at 1 o'clock this morning. The house was insured in the Victoria Offico for £?M, and the contents in the Royal Exchange. Assurance Ollic? for £150. Tho next house, owned and occupied by Mrs. J. W. Millie, was slightly damaged. Timaru, October 25. The Timaru A. and P. Show opened today, but was unfortunate as regards weather. A steady rain tell all the afternoon and there is no sign of it clearing for "People's Day" to-morrow. The entries— a few over 1000—are fomewhat less than the total last year. To-day the sheep and light harness horses were judged. RotGrua, October 25. A poll on the proposal to constitute Rotcrua a fire district resulted in it boing carried by IGI votes to two. Wanganui, October 25. The North Island riflo championship meeting will be held at Wanganui on December 27 and 28. Tho local executive committee havo decided to cany out last year's programme with the exception that 'bull's-eyo targets will bo used.
