Matters in connection with tho water- ' side striko are quiet. Vessels are being 1 tied up as they arrive, and the c-oal lumpers continue bunkering work. : Tho Cain's Co-operative Company, owners of a number of small coasting vessels, liavo conceded the men's demands. Efforts are being made to secure a compromise to allow tho Paloona's cargo of apples from Hobart to bo unloaded, as it is feared that they will bo spoiled. Tho crows and permanent wharf hands have removed perishable portions of car- ; goes by arriving steamers, but no at--1 tempt has been mado to touch the general • cargoes, or to do anything in the way o\ ■ loading. . The Adelaido and Melbourne Steamship 1 Companies aro amongst tho shipownets affected. The latter company's steamer Sydney sailed without a cargo. To-day's arrivals add considerably to tho list of vessels tied up. Tho masters point out that an agreement, with a currency of three years, was recently signed with the wharf labourers, providing for a Is. 3d. rate. This agreement was broken without notice. A fear is expressed that if tho coastal ' demands aro conceded, tho deep-sea men ' will demand an increase to the extent ol' ' tho extra amount they up to tho present have received. The Waterside Workers' Federation will meet in Melbourne to-morrow to discuss the situation. A PENALTY OF £1000. AGREEMENT WITH SHIPOWNERS. (Rec. October 20, 10 p.m.) Melbourne, October 20. The shipowners have telegraphed to tho Wharf Labourers' Union to supply labour to work cargo as provided for i 0 tho agreement, under a penalty of XIOOO. Tho Registrar of the Arbitration Court has also telegraphed to the union leaders to attend a conference on Monday. SYDNEY'S RAILWAY PALACE. Sydney, October 20. The Government intends to complete the original design of the Sydney Central railway statiou at an extra cost of jCl(is,ooo. [About X 1,000,009 has been spent on the station up to date. Tho position regarding tho wharf labourers' strike is unchanged. The men refused to unload the Paloona's apples, which total ten thousand cases. It is now feared that the consignment will bo allowed to rot. Tho fruit merchants have offered'to guarantee the extra threepence an hour demanded, but they liavo not yet received a reply to their offer. Tho wharf labourers aro optimistic, and boliove that they will gain their demands.
