APPEAL COURT. THE DISHONEST SOLICITOR. • CASE PKOM WAITARA. A rulo nisi, granted b.y tlin Supremo Court at Now Plymouth, to striko Walter Wilkes oft' tho roll of solicitors, was yesterday made absolute by tho Court of Appeal, comprising Sir Joshua Williams, Mr. Justice Jidwards, Mr. Justice Chapman, ami Mr. 'Justice Sim. Wilkes was a solicitor practising at Waitara, and the allegation against him was that he appropriated the sum of ,fBO "s. Sd., the. property of Agnes Sutherland, boardinghoiise-kocper. Wilkes had received tho money as the result of a salo of property, and had neglected to hand it. over. Detective lioddam, of New Plymouth, supplied information to' the Jjaw Society, to the effect that Wilkes had left Auckland for Sydney on March 13, under the assumed name" of Anderson, and was believed to bo now residing in Sydney. Ho did not appear to oppose tho motion. Jlr. T. N. Holmden appeared for the Taranaki Law Socicty in the Court of Appeal yesterday. WHAT JURISDICTION? In the Court of Appeal yesterday, hearing was concluded in the caso of Taituma Maraueatana and others v. Patena Kerehi and another. This was ail appeal from a. Supremo Court decision, which laid down that the Chief .Tudcre of the Native Land Court had no jurisdiction to interfero with an order made by the Native Appellate Court in 1907 in reference to a subdivision of land in the Taupo district, known as Okaliukura 'No. 1. Details of protracted legislation over the land were published yesterday. Tho bench was occunied by Sir Joshua Williams, Mr. Justice Edwards. Mr. Justice Clmpmnn, and Mr. Justice Sim. Mr. H. D. Pell, K.C., with him Mr. T. \Y. Lewis, of Hastings, appeared for the atwellanfes, and Mr. Martin Chapman, K.C., with him Mr. S. A. Atkinson, for the respondents. Argument concluded just before 4 p.m., when the Court reserved decision.
