WHY THIS DAVEY CLAUSE?
Sir,—What is behind the Davey amendment? Do tho Government want to get control of tho New Zealand tramways, so as to run in conjunction with their oloctric power scheme? Evidently, and tiio public don't count much, when a cortai", object is to bo gained, as conditions si.oh as those- imposed in the amendment aro directly against the public's interest. According to published reports in your paper, it must iucrwiso Clio, faros .very considerably, if they arc not ncfrually doubled, wliich means a tremendous increase in the cost of living; and it will bo questionable if working men cannot got cheaper house reat in town than in tho suburbs. Looked at in whatever way you like, it is a step in a backward direction, and will add discomfort and extreme inconvenience and much hardship to tho poorer classes. Aro they trying to make us part with our trams ij* this unfair manner?—l. am, otc, J. -SINCLAIR.
