In the junior nf&tck Petone scored 140 for six wickets, Barber knocking up 57. St. Mark's were disposed of for 84. In tho third-class game Pclono made 120 and St. Mark's 27. CHRISTCHURCH SEASON. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Christchurch, October 14. Grade cricket matches opened to-day on good wickets, but the weather was bitterly cold, though fine. Last year's winners, St. Albans, were pitted against the weak East Christclnircii Club. Tho latter eleven, thanks to a lastwicket partnership of 83, amassed tho respectable total of ISI, Ward (the last man) making 63 by very vigorous cricket. St. Albans reopened with 41, without loss. Sandman failed to get a wicket, but Crawshaw bowled excellently, getting six for 67. Eiccarton had first strike against Linwood, and an excellent first-wicket partnership between Oaygill and Alf. Norman was chiefly responsible for a total of 198, to which Caysill contributed 41, and Norman 59. Thomas was tho best bowler for Linwood, taking four wickets for 67 runs. Linwood have lost two of their "tail" men for 35. West Christchurch, batting against Sydenham, made a sorry start, five wickets falling for 29, but then G. B. Lusk (brother or 11. B. Lusk, tlis Canterbury representative player) came to the rescuo with a finely-played innings of G4, and 60 saved the total from mediocrity. When the last. wicket fell 1-13 had been put on the sheet. Bennett was in good form with the ball, and captured four wickets for IG. Sydenham's opening was inauspicious, four wickets falling for -19. of which Hayes compiled 39. Tho total, when time was called, was four wickets for 55. In the lower grade matches centuries woro scored on llngley Park by Ilickmott (Boys' High School), who made 112 and AValter (St. Albans), who made 110.

CENTRE CHALLENGE SHIELD. The secretary of the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Swimming Association has been informed that the Yalrthurst Swimming Club, of Christchurch, has donated to the association a challenge shield tor competition among the various centres at the championship meeting. The secretary also acknowledges the receipt of 0 trophy which Mr. T. M. Wilford promised at the opening of last season, for tho boy who made most progress in the art during the season. THOENDON CLUB. Tho Thorndon Bowling Club's greens wore opened for tho season on Saturday afternoon. Mr, E. "W. Seaton, president, in an appropriate speech welcomed old and new members, and visitors from other city and suburban eluhs-, and also tho large numbea* of ladies who wero present. After tho first jack bad been thrown by Mrs. Seaton, play commenced on fourteen rinks,- and very enjoyable games wctq played, the greens being in first-class condition, for wliich credit is due to the green committee and to Air.
