THE ELECTORAL ROLLS.
THE POSITION AT AUCKLAND. The muddle that was mado in conne©. tion with the electoral census has necessitated the adoption of further measures to Hccuro complete legal roils in tho At*eklaud electorates, states the "Heraid. A district registrar informed a reporter that it was anticipated that the census would have disclosed who was absent from tho district, and Uioso who ought not to remain on tho roll. It had, howover, failed in both respects, and, therefore, it- became unsafe to remove many names from the roll. The position at present is that no names arc beinp removed from tho roll, unless tho registrar is positively satisfiod ,of his right to romovo them. The roctmt electoral census failed bocause it did not show tho absentees in every case, nor, ill somo cases, who are the occupant? of houses. In certain instances peoplo who wore in England when the census was taken havo now returned to Auckland, and their names havo to bo kept on tho roll, despite tho census. As far as (he registrars oro concerned, the purging of the rolls is now proceeding automatically by notices of transfers. Sub-enumerators arc being sont round tho various districts to hunt up those who havo to far failed to send in their schedules. "13v tho time tho cloction has urI rived," said tho registrar, "the rolls will be in a very fair condition."
