OTAGO GETS CHAMPIONSHIPS. CHIEF CONTROL MEETS. The twenty-fourth annual meeting of the New Zealand Kowing Association was held on Saturday evening, Mr. K E. Hammond presided. The following delegates wcro present i—Messrs. E. lnnes and Y). Cogliin (Auckland), !•'. 1). Kesteven and W. J. Gaudin (Canterbury), 1\ H. S. Galvin (Marlborough), 11. JU. Isaacs and M. Priest (Otago), E. li. Hammond and H. Joosten (Southland), George Lauchlan (Wanganui), B. A. Morris, J. E. Widdop, and 1). R. Menzies (Wellington). The chairman observed that there had been a poor increase in the membership during tho year. The entries for the championship regatta wero disappointing, particularly after the trouble which 'Wanganui had gone to in this matter. He thought that, if the committees of individual clubs interested themselves in this, they might do good work by preparing crews for championship meetings. They hud not sufficient information yet to enable them to make any recommendations regarding competitions outside New Zealand. New Zealand clubs were allowed to accept money prizes (for the clubs only), and their members were, therefore, debarred from competing in Australia, on account of Australia's amateur definition.
TIIO following officers were elected:— President, Kir James Mills (Dimedin); vice-presidents, .Messrs. A'. D. Kesteven and A. S. Biss; council, Messrs. E. E. Hammond, 11. lnnes, li. M. Isaacs, G. Lauchlan, B. A. Marris, P. W. M'Villy, and J. E. Widdop; secretary and treasurer, Mr. A. 1). Bayfield; auditor, Mr. G. C. I'acho. A ballot was held as to where this year's championships should be held. Fourteen votes were cast in favour of Otago, and eight for Wellington. One of the Otago delegates stated that-the date fixed upon would probably be in February. . , A motion bv Otago to fix the minimum weight of coxswains at 7st. was defeated. The secretary stated that a letter had been received from the New South Wales Association on the question of amateurism. The letter stated that that association had decided that a man who competed for money prizes (whether the prize went to him or his club* was ineligible to compete. A -New Zealand oarsman could nnplv for reinstatement, and succeed if he proved that he did not; participate in the prize. However, he could not compete in inter-State contests, the meeting decided that, the council should take steps to remove the disability. \ racing-boat builder in Wanganui had asked if he came within the amateur definition, and it was stated that the council had replied that the occupation debarred him. The council's action was continued. It was decided to alee a leral opinion as to whether or not a builder of boats other than racing boats was a professional. ,T M. .Tackson. formerly a member oi the "Blenheim Kowing Club, made another application for reinstatement as an amateur The application was relumed, mily the Marlborough delegate supporting it.
