PETONE TENNIS CLUB.
Some sixty Indies and men were present at tho opening of the eighteenth season of the Petone Tenuis Club on Saturday afternoon. The courts and grounds have undergone a good renovation by n working committee during the winter, and, in the glorious weather, looked very pretty. Mr. B. C. Warucs, vice-president of the club, performed tho opening coremony of hitting a ball across tho courts, after delivering a humorous little speech. An enjoyable afternoon's play followed, some of the games being really good, while others, as might be expected "on an opening day. were inclined to be a little tame. It is unfortunate that the club is limited to two courts, which are rather inadequate for forty players. Afternoon tea. was provided for players and visitors by the lady members of the club. It is probable thai, tho club will enter teams for cup, pennant, and racquet competitions in the inter-club tournament. A handicap combined doubles competition will take place on Labour Day. Mr. Warncs has donated a racquet for tho lady player showing greatest improvement during the season. The silver cup, won by the ladies and men's B teams during the past season, was a. conspicuous ornament in tho pavilion on Saturday afternoon*
