RATHER ACTIVE BURGLAR.
FIVE PBEMISES IN ONE NIGHT. (From' Our Special Correspondent.) Palmerston N., October 7. Somewhat of a sensation was caused in town this morning wkon the word spread that a number of business places had been burglariously entered during tho night. From indications at five premises broken into, tho work 6eoms to bavo been that of an amateur. Very littlo booty appears to bavo been obtained. Tho premises entered were in the western sido of the Square between tho Commercial Hotel ana the sito of tho Union Bank. Apparently tho fiist place entered was Kichardson's boot shop, tho burglar effecting nil entrance at' the back. Other business places entered were those of Messrs. liavcnhill and Co., commission agents, A. do Lueu, tailor, F. Mowlcm, tobacconist, and A. Westmoreland, bookseller. Several intermediate premises, including Mr. N. Slubbs's jewollcr's shop, which is always left well lighted, were not interfered with, though traces of the burglar were found outside. AH tho premises entered were ransacked, and tho contents thrown about but - , except for a number of postage stamps and a. few coppers, nolhing of value was stolen. Safes wore left untouched, but a couple of cash registers were found to bo a good deal damaged, no doubt in an endeavour to got them open. Tho police have the matter in hand, but so far no arrests havo been made.
