ifrom Oar Special CorresDonnenU Mastcrton, September 25. ■ Dominion Day passed off very quietly in Mastertoa. The public offices, schools, legal establishments, and banks were closed, but everybody else appeared to be pursuing the even tenor of his way. An appeal is being made to dog fanciers in Mastcrton for subscriptions towards a fund to assist the family of the late- Mr. H. E. Dovey, who was a prominent fancier. The fund is being inaugurated by the New Zealand Kennel Club. Trinity College musical examinations wero held in Masterton on Saturday, when there was quite a large number of candidates from various parts of the district. A settler in tha Gladstone district has received the splendid return of 127 per cent, of lambs this season. A number of farmers in the Ma.sterton district are using nitre-bacteriae this year for fertilising purposes. Mr. W. Platt, of Masterton, who has proved himself very successful in the use of "the divining rod," is at present endeavouring to locate water in certain portions of the Poverty Bay and Hawke's Bay districts. The final round in connection with the president's trophy was played by members of the .Masterton Golf Club on Saturday afternoon last, C. Perry handing in the best card. The result of the three rounds was that 11. Messenger topped the list with 3J- points. AVork on tho bridges at the northern approach to.
