DEPUTATION TO THE MAYOR, The pick-o.'nd-shovcl men, both ia the city and suburbs have beaa for the last week sending applications for emplovnjent.to the Mayor, (Mr. T. M. Wilford, M.F.) This position has arisen consequent on tho completion of a number of drainage works. In order to employ some of the men, it has bean arranged that the Bell Street reservoir will lx; commenced at once, and the , duplication of the Wjiuni-o-mata main will al>o be started .lmmediatolv. -Vow that, the pipes'have been removed, tho Charlotte Street tramway loop will be begun also. The difficulty caused by men coining in from the suburbs looking for any work, reached an acute stage yt-storday innrnins, when a deputation of uiieinploycd waited on the Mayor. A number of cases of real hardship were shown, and the necessity for immediate action wa* realised.
Mr. Wilford then waited on Sir Joseph Hard, and asked, him to determine whether tho rest of the labourers who had no immediate prospect of work here could hnve some employment elsewhere. Tho Prime Minister undertook to see tha Minister for Public Works, and to communicate with the Mayor shortly. A communication was received by tho Mayor from the Prime Minister Inter in the morning, stating that he had arranged with the Minister for Public Works that fifty men should bo sent to the Stratford-Ongaruo railway. This will ab«orb thosi- who are at present asking for labourers' work. Those who are willing to lake up this wart are rctjiiisled to Fend in their names and addresses to tho Mayor at once.
