PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
(From Our Special Correspondent.) Palmcrston, September 11. At the monthly meetiug of th 9 Pohaugina County Council on Saturday (Councillor R. W. Brown, chairman, presiding), the clerk was instructed to reply to a communication from the Territorial Headquarters Staff, intimating that halls for drill purposes were available at Poliangina, Raumai. and Apiti. It was dccided to inform Mrs. A. Shannon, in reply to her offer of 2s. per acre rent for the road reserve, Pohangina Township, that the council could not accept less than 10s. per acre. In regard to straying stock, it was resolved .to prosecute owners during the current month, but that the ranger's services be dispensed with at the end of the month. It was decided to prosecute settlers for leaving goods, etc., on the side of - roads, as several rather fortunate escapes from accident had occurred through I his. Tho Horse Shoe Bend, near Raumai, is to be improved by having tho road widened. Mr. George Fowlds, M.P., presented the prizes won at the Sunday School Union by the members of tho Palmcrston Presbyterian Sunday School. Mr. Fowlds ;d----dressed the children at some length. Mr. ■I. J. Whitehead, president also addressed tho scholars, congratulated them on their success, and urging them to continue tho work. lie pointed, out there wero nine hundred scholars in the local union, and he thought that a much larger percentage should take part in the annual examina-' tion. On the motion of Mr. T. R. Hodder, a vote of thanks was accorded Mr. l'owlds. About a dozen members of the Manawatu Golf Club will take part, in tho tournament, which opens at Xapier tomorrow. His Majesty's Theatre was crowded yesterday afternoon, when Lieut-Colonel Birki'nshaw gave an interesting address on the "Life and Work of General Booth." Tho Mayor (Mr. >T. A. Nash) presided, and Messrs. A. E, Bennett and ,T. Bett contributed vocal items, Mr. C. W. Xaylor presided at the organ. The booking of seats for the entertainment which is to be given here next Saturday evening by the Wellington Orphans' Club in aid of the proposed children's ward at the Palmcrston Hospital was quite brisk to-day and it appears as if tho entertainment will be very well patronised. At the Police Court to-day ,Tohn Carkeek and Alexander M'Guilkin pleaded guiltv to charges of travelling on th? railway without tickets. Each was fined 10s. aiid costs 13s.
