THE TURF.

NOTES AND COMMENTS. [Br Glen-cos,] Tho Dannevirko Racing Club's Steeplechase meeting will bo held to-morrow. New Zealand horses are engaged in every race at the liosehill meeting in Sydney next Saturday. Mr. T. 11. Lowry's cast-off Chantcuso is putting up a great record in Java. When the last mail left she had started 12 times, winning on ten occasions and running second on the other two. flaith, who defeated Comedy Iviug in tho Memsio Stakes a week ago, was withdrawn' from the A.J.C. Derby some little timo back, but he is in the Y.R.C. Derby. Ho has 7st. 31b. in the Caulfield Cup, and 7st. lib. in tho Melbourne Cup. Durriaus has tho same weight as Flaith in the Caulfield Cup, and has 7st. in tho Melbourne Cup, whilo ho is also engaged in tho ■V.B.C. Derby. It rather seems that Lady Medallist's next mission is to bo tho Epsom Handicap, and Sydney files to hand record that tho New Zealand mare was heavily backed in several States simultaneously. Those who know the deeds of the St. Alwynuo mare in this country, however, will not be enamoured of her chances in the big Sydney mile for she is not a good beginner, and, in a big field, such as is sure to start in tho Epsom Handicap, sho will havo all the worst of matters. Her best performances in this country havo always been put up over longer distances than a mile. In Australia the Malster stock are continually winning races over all distances, but sprinting seems to be their forte. At Marton last week a Malster filly, Madeira, who hails from the Forirua stable, made her first appearance under silk in the concluding event of the meeting, and was heavily supported, but her backers were doomed to disappointment, for tho fillv failed to flatter her backers at anv portion of the race, and was one of tho" last to finish. Certainly she drew an outsido position, which would Ire all against her, as. the race started on the bend, but sho should have showed pace at somo part of tho journey, and this sho failed to do., Time, however, may work a change for tho better, but that change will rcquiro to bo a marked ono before she can win. Suitablo light-weight jockeys were net easy to find at Marton. Several owners had to put up overweight, and even then the horsemanship displayed was of a somewhat indifferent character. It is, of course, rather annoying to the trainer of a horse when lie sees a raco thrown away by defective riding, after it has taken him months lo get his horse ready for the day of the race. When the A.J.C. recently imposed a sentence of five years on Trainer L. Want in connection with what is known as the Flavigny case at Rosehill they added a rider stating that tho jockey (H. Gray) was in no way to blame in the matter. This is rather good, and most people -will smile'. The horseman, one would imagine, needed no exculpating for having protected his own life and limbs. " Over .£200,(100 was passed through tho totalisator on the six events that mado up the progranlino on the day that tho Grand Prix de Paris jvas rim on tho Longchamps course in June last. The ancient Soult gelding, Waipuna, ap- j pears to havo taken well to the jumping business, and last month he made a new timo record, for South Australia, by running the two miles ill the Eastwood Hurdle Race in 3min. It Is small wonder that the champion Australian hurdler The Reckoning failed to give him 371b. An Australian writer states definitely that tho Auckland jockey, C. Browne, will remain in Melbourne to do the riding for I. Fnulsbam's stable this season. At tho meeting of tho Ascot Racing Club on September 2, an inquiry, hold into tho running of Rarata, who finished second in tho Flying Handicap, resulted in tho disqualification of the New Zoa-land-bred gelding, together with his owner (J. Mooney) and trainer (J. Vernor), for twelve months, while his rider (J. Bindon) was suspended for a similar period. J. Vernor has appealed against his disqualification by the stipendiary stewards.
