THEIR ANNUAL EFFORT. From the Officer Commanding th# brauch of tho Salvation Army in Wellington conies an announcement of the annual self-denial appeal which for many years has been prominent in the Army s activities. We also endeavour to enlist year by year tho practical sympatliv of our many friends. I his appeal has 'rapidly developed, and has become tho financial mainstay of the great network of rescue institutions for men, women, a.nd children which are. now in existence throughout the world. lam just completing the arrangements for tho share which the Wellington Corns will "take in the effort. Last year the resl)oiise to our appeal was affccted by tho Children's Hospital scheme, which was on at tlio same time. We 'are hoping to recover lost ground this year. In Wellington wo have four social homes. Tho Rescue Home has 35 inmates, the Maternitv Home 110, the Children s Home 50, whilst the lion's Shelter is as n rule full every night during tho winter months, and is also much in demand oven through the summer. In addition to the above, liio gaol is visited, and persons met on discharge. We .have a, woman officer, representing tho homes, who attends (ho Police Court regularly; hospitals nnd benevolent institutions are visited, and. over two hundred interesting papers ato distributed free of charge every week; the "League of Mercy" sislers visit in tho poor quarters of the city, wisely distributing relief ami giving a helping hand and good advice where necessary. The two corps, whore Salvationists gather tor their meetings, are also centres where good, practical work is arranged. Hundreds of men, women, and children, looking backward, thank God and the Army for help received through (he*? homes and agencies. Our work is <)uile unsectarinn. We assist those who are in need, regardless of sect or creed.
