NAVY LEAGUE CONFERENCE.
FIRST IN NEW ZEALAND. The first conference of branch repre- , • sentatives of tho Navy League will tuko placo in No. 1 Committee Room of tho ' Town Hall to-day, commencing at 11 a.m. Sir Joseph Ward will probably open tho proceedings. Tho delegates will include: Messrs. Norton Francis (Waimato), J. 0. Craigie, M.P., and G. K. Arber (Timaru), Pascoe (Ashburton), the Rev. Elliott • Chambers and Captain C. J. Treleaven (Christehurch), Messrs. Jas. Allen, M.P., ' T. IC. Sidey, M.P., and J. Thomson, M.P. (J)unndin), C. W. Palmer (Southland and Wellington), T. M. Wilford, M.P., 11. , Darroch, and William Fraser, M.P. (Wellington). Tho order paper includes such subjects as a proposal to establish a paper in New Zealand in lieu of "The Navy" (a proposal not favoured by the Wellington, Otago, and Southland branches); the exchango of suitable kinematograph films, . tho establishment of Borne form of preliminary sea training for boys after school hours to act as a feeder to tho Government training ship; to secure shoro depots and a larger training ship than tho Amokura. Another question to bo brought forward will bo the exemption from military service of those youths who prefer to take up naval service. Tho conference will be asked to approve of a recommendation—"That the formation of a New Zealand Royal Naval Reserve is i necessary, and should be established"; t and "that the Education Department bo approached with a view to modifying tho, school syllabus in the direction of providing for an increased knowledge of modern history being taught at tho schools." .
