THE TURF.
NOTES AND COMMENTS. [Bt Glf.xcoe.l Acceptances for the Dannovirke Racing Club's meetiug close on Friday next. Soultoria.was withdrawn from th-3 Avondale Cup at 10 o'clock on Jlonday morning. I The Gisborne trainer P. Loomb arrived ' in Auckland on Sunday with Formidable, Lannacost, and Monorail, all of whom am engaged at the Avoudale Jockey Club's meeting. At a committee meeting of the Wellington Racing Club held on Monday, the programme for tho spring meeting was passed. It is tho same as last year, with the exception of a few slight alterations in second and third moneys. The aununl meeting of members of the Wellington l?acing Club is to be held on Tuesday, September 2(J. Nominations for office-bearers close on September 11. At Elkrslie on Saturday morning, tho New Zealand Cup candidate, Advocate, galloped seven furlongs with the three-year-olds Malwa α-nd'Miss Win-owe. ■Jlalwa had slightly the best of the gallop. Hangitane and Esmeh have Ikou scratched for all engagements at the Marton Jockey Club's meeting. It is definitely announced that Midnight Bun is to bo brought back from Sydney io contest the New Zealand Cup. At tho present time Jfr. E. J. Watt has two representatives engaged—Jlontiform and Midnight Sun. Probably the pair will be tried later, nnd tho best one selected to carry the blue-and-white jacket. Privato trials, however, are ofton' delusive, and the best liorso does not always win. Midnight Sun has only won a single race, but ho appears to bo a really good one, though lazy in the extreme, 'and one requiring a lot of riding: This being the caso, ho is never likely to win a track gallop. K. Hatch is returning to Christchurch on Friday night, and will be riding next week at the Ashburton .meeting. His mounts there include Crosbie, Kilts, Claumena, and Nikon. C. Emerson is also making tho trip south to ride his father's horse Palsottia, who has an engagement in the Maiden Raco at Ashburton. The last-named is, only a 11.2 pouy, but it has a great private reputation. Emerson will also ride Tannhauser, who is to be produced in the Ashburton Handicap. This New Zealand Cup candidate, who had to be stopped in his work recently owing to striking himself, is agnin bowling along fre-oly at Riccnrton under the watchful eye of P. M'Grath. The local horsemen, R. E. Hatch, T. Pritehard. a.ud E. Murtagh were on tho .Jlain Trunk express yesterday, en route for Jlarton. The nrst-naiiicd will ride Mondip and Sam Pan. Pritehard will l>o up on Windage in the Welter a-ad on Oxton in the Hurdles. Jlurtagh will ride .Sylvia Maid. Judging by the donblo market (usually a reliable guide in such cases) it seems that Te Kahurangi will start favourite ia the open sprint raco'to-day, and Kilosteri will occupy a similar post in tho Jlarton Handicap. The' forward running of this pair at Trentham foreshadows their victory at Marto.i to-day. Both horses will bo ridden by C. Emerson, Wirral, who seems very well handicapped in tho Hack Steeples at Jlarton today, will, as usual, be ridden by R. Gray. The stable controlled by A. Attwood at Feilding will start two horses in tho Hack Hurdles at Marton, and the better of the pair should nearly score. Captain Bell won at Napier Park after being very unlucky in his maiden effort at Hastings on tho previous week, and To Ru was on hand in each of his threo races at Trentham. The Birkenhead gelding seems to be growing moro solid with age. FIXTURES. Septcmbot 0 iad 7—Martou J.C. annual September 13—Dannevirko K.C. Steeplechase. SeptemU-T 11 and 15—Ashburton County K.C.
