POWELKA.
News about Powelka is as scaTco as when the man was safe in custody. Yesterday morning he completed his seventh day in his present career of fugitive. In the week that has sped since ho loft the walls of the prison behind him, there has been neither word nor trace of him. It must, of course, bo mentioned that a man taken by some to bo tho fugitive was seen entering Botanical Gardens on the morning of his escape. But a long search revealed no Powelka. Last night the oft-repeated inquiry at the Polico Station brought forth the familiar reply; there was no news. Tho rumour-monger and the theory-carpenter have been quiet, and little is now said or thought of the matter. Our Paimerston correspondent, writing on the same subject, states:—"No news" is said to be "goad news," but a number of people here do not look at it in that light so far as the man Joseph Powelka is concerned, as they arc particularly anxious as to his whereabouts. A rumour lias been going the rounds liore that Powelka is not far from Ashhurst, and, as a consequence, an extra police con. stable has been sent to that district. At Longburn also people aro anxious to know what has become of (he tugitive. But tho general feeling among Palmorstonians at present appears to bo 0110 of indifference, and so far as conversation is concerned Towelka's name is scarcely mentioned.
