THE TELEPHONE "HABIT."

REDUCED RATES FORESHADOWED. There was a great demand growing up, said t'ho l'rinio Minister at tho lettercarriers' social 011 Saturday night, for urban and suburban telephones. (Applause.) The telephone "habit" had a great way of extending itself to others, it was a fact, in spite of what might bo thought to tho contrary, that in tho Old Country it was tho exception to find a telephone in private houses outsido tho towns. Nino out of every ten private houses in tho cities also had not tho telephone. In this country tho "habit" was growing, and it was intended by the Government that tho system should bo bronghlj'ight up to dato -in every respect. The chief electrician had been over the world some time ago to ascertain tho best systems in vogue, aud upon tho receipt of his report tho matter would be gone into. The system 'would be selected that would give the cheapest and most effective service. The Primo Minister said ho was sanguine that bcfcro very long they would be able to reduce the rates for long-distance telephoning. (Hear, hear.) One could not help recognising the importance of people who lived from 50 to 100 miles distant from tho chief centrcs of activity being able to get into touch, with these places by telephone, ire was positive in the statement that before long tho cost of these long-distancc communications would be reduced. Additional .facilities also would bo given for private lines. • ■ <
