BANK RATES OF DISCOUNT. . The Hank of England rate was rcduccd on June 9 from 4 to 3 per cent.; on September 29 it was advanced to 4 per ccnt., and on Octobcr 20 to 5 cer cent. On Do- i comber 1 it was lowered to 4}. per cent., on January 27 to 4 per cent., and on February 16 to 3J per cent., and on March 9 to 3 per cent. Tho Bank of France rate was rcduccd from 3J to 3 per cent, on January 23, 19C6, •and remains at the latter figure. The Imperial Bank of Germany od January 21. 1909, lowered its rate from 5 to 4* per cent., and on February 10 to 4 per cent. But on September 26 it was raised to 5 per cent., on February 6 it was rcduced to 4J per cent., and on February 19 to 4 per cent. MARKET RATES OF DISCOUNT. Holders are asking 365. for South Australian, per tailor, September shipment, and 35?. HAd.. per steamer, August-September shipment, 345. 6d. for South Australian and Yictorian parcels afloat. There is a ciuiet dmand for Australian on spot, at 345. 6d. Flout is steady, but inactive. Oats arc quiet. La Plata, August-Septem-ber shipment, 16s, 6d. Beans.—New Zealand, 355. to 365. In "view of the increasing direct shipments of produce the Chamber of Commerce and port authorities of Hull in October propose tending Mr. Wilson, the London agent of the Hull and Barnsley Railway, to interview the principal shippers in Australia and New Zealand. GRAIN AND PRODUCE. . (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Ciiristchurch, September 1. There has besu a fair demand for wheat during the week to fill orders for the North Island, though some of tho larger growers have not yet sold their wheat. There arc few offers of grain from the country, and it is only email lots that merchants and millers ran pick up from timeto time at ruling rates. Those who arc .holding fairly large lines arc not willing s to sell under 3s. t 6d. jit country stations, and some are asking 3s. Bd., or even more. A few iinca have changed, hands during the week up to 3s. sd. for tuscan at country stations and this price has also been refused. The firmer tone in the Sydney market has had a hardening effect lcettlly. | Buyers have had to increase their limit of prices for oats, but owing to the small quantity held by growers there arc not manv lines offering.
