FEATHERSTON. At a mooting of the session of the Presbyterian Church, held hero on Wednesday night, it was docided to forward to the General Assembly a resolution in favour of a Wairarapa presbytery being formed. At an early hour on Thursday morning the Kaiwaiwni School l/itilding was totally destroyed by iil'e. The cause of the outbreak is not known. The use of machinery for milking by dairy-farmers, is becoming nitre general. Three farmers in tho Kaiwaiwai district are having machinery installed for tho coming season. OTAKI. Jlr. G. M, Farmer, who has been in practice here as a dentist for tlie ast two or three years, is leaving the district to take up practice in Pahiatua. At the Police Court yesterday a youth named Samuel Bevan was charged with issuing a valueless cheque, lie was remanded to Palmerston for trial. Our town was well represented at tie A'apier Elocutionary contests, and it is gratifying to know that all representatives "gained honours. Miss Pauline Brown, a very clever girl of 15 years, carried off prizes in the open class, and I won in all one first prize, three seconds, I a third, and a medal. Air. Skerman, of the local staff- of tins Bank of Australasia, has left on a fortnight's furlough. The . holiday * will bo spent in the Auckland district. FEILDING. The Halcombo School is to be closed for the term holidays next week. A presentation is to be made to Mr. M'Creedy, who is retiring from the headuiastersliip of the Cvofton School, in tl\c Marton district, this evening. The chairman of tho Wanganui Education Board (Jlr. Fred. Pirani) will raak,e the presentation. Mr. It. E. Geary, town clerk, has beenappointed borough inspector to act tem- ! porarily pending the appointment of an engineer, Mr.'Randall'having resigned. -Members of the local Masonic Lodge and their wives held a "social" gathering in the Masonic Hall last night, Dr. "Willis, AY.M., presiding. An interesting card tournament was played off at Colyton this week between the Eeilding and Colyton Clubs, and ended 1 in a draw, 73 points cach. The death occurred at her residence, Kiwitea, yesterday morning of Mrs. Jacob, wife of Jlr. W. P. Jacob, after .a protracted illness. Mr. and Mrs. Jacob came out from Ireland over 20 years ago, and Sirs. Jacob was known as a hospitable and kindly lady, interested in all things for the good of the district. Her two sous are William, residing ,at home, and Cecil, who is studying la\v. The latter was going, throueh his course at Cainbridge University, but some two months ago he was advised by cable of the serious .nature; of his mother's illness,, and returned home. SHANNON. A concert in. aid of the funds of the Anglican Church was held on Wednesday evening. in the Druids' Hall, when there was a large attendance. The Daffodil Pierrot Troupe, under the direction oi Mr. P. Tho annual meeting'of the Greytown Presbyterian Church was held on Monday night, the Rev. G. K. Stowell presiding. The balance-sheet and report were read and considered very satisfactory. It was decided to make Featherston the headquarters for this district. Tho following were elccted. managers for the year:— Messrs. 11. Haigh, T. Fisher, R. L.iJcllicoe, J. Cross, C. Tolly, J. Patterson, T; C. Irving, H. Whincop, and J. Wallijs. A "social" was held after the meeting, and Miss Bright, late organist, was presented with a purse of sovereigns. An Egg Circle is .now formed here, with Maxton's Mart as tho receiving depbt. Eggs will' be sent to Wellington next weak. . ' ' ' Municipal gas has not yet been turned on. Tho.men are sti 1 .busy, laying pipes to tho residences of consumers." CARTERTON. Mr. W. Moore, of Carterton, lias found it necessary to enter the South Wairarapa Hospital to undergo special treatment. Tho Belvedere Dairy Company's factory opened on Monday, with 'a supply of 628 gallons. The directors have decided to iustal two agitators in tho factory. Mr. B. Trapp has been appointed clerk and treasurer to the Wairarapa South County Council, in place of -Jlr. 11. 11, Woltcrs, who has resigned after thirty years of service. At tlie last monthly meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council the ranger reported having impounded 11 horses and 51 head of cattle during the month. Mr. and Mrs. Heald, former residents of Carterton, are 'at present on a trip to the Old Country. 'They Were in London for tho Coronation, and are having a very enjoyable time viewing the historic parts of. London. Jlr. Heald was formerly stationmaster here. _ A shock of earthquake was' experienced in Carterton shortly after seven o'clock 'on Tuesday evening.. • The Carterton branch o'f the Wairarapa Egg Circle sent away some 320 dozen e*gs on 'Ihursday morning. J Th'o funeral of the late Michael Byrne ' who was found drowned in a creek at Te Wharau oil Sunday, took place at the I Clareville Cemetery on Wednesday afternoon. I
