HOCKEY.
CANTERBURY V. SOUTHLAND., ; (By Telegraph.—Press "Association.). Christchurch, August 31. The interprovincial ladies' hockey, match between Canterbury and .Southland was played on Sydenham Park this afternoon, and resulted in a win for Canterbury by'two goals to one. Play was-fast and open, splendid form- being shown by both sides. The Southland and Canterbury A and Canterbury B teams, who are competing at tho tournament at Wellington, left -by to-night's steamer.
Ladies' hockey this year is at a higher standard than it has , ever been before,, and the approaching tournament is being awaited by enthusiasts with interests" It would not bo safe to suggest the winning team, as some of the country clubs this .year aro exceptionally good, and accords ing to reports which have como to hand from time to time, have been playing really first-class hockey. , ' On Friday "and Saturday .Wellington, will bo invaded from all quarters by contingents of :ath-k-tic young ladies, .-.each wearing their distinctive badges, and. numbering in the aggregate three hundred. ' Tho matches commence at Day's • Bay on . Saturday." next, and will continue, Jill through.'the' week, and finish on the following Saturday. Dr. A. Izard, tho president of;tho 'New Zealand Ladies' Hockey Association, is to entertain tho. ladies at tea at-the' Bay. The tournament, will' conclude with a dance in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall 011 Saturday night week, at which her Excellency Lady Islington will distribute the" prizes. In all probability her Excellency will be present at some of the matches.
