NOTES AND COMMENTS.
[Br Glencoe.]
Tho inaugural meeting of the Manawatu Trotting Club lakes place on tne Awapuni Kac-tcourso, I'aluitvston North, on Wednesday next, and present indications are thai il will bo very successful. A first-class lot of trotters are engaged in the different events, and some of the visitors aro already putting in an appearance at the convincing ground. Mr. G. F. D. Watson, secretary of the club, notifies owners that acceptances for the Maiden Handicap close on ths course at 12 noon on tho day of the races. Acceptances for the other events close at 1.10 p.m. the same day. Nominations for tho spring meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club close on Monday next', with the club's secretary, Mr. W. Hall. The club has drawn up a good programme for the two days, and liberal prize money is offered. Te Arai, the hero of last yeat's Grand National .Steeplechase, is now turned out at Awapuni. He seems broken down in all four legs, and is unlikely to race again. Acceptances for the first day's events at tho Marton Jockey Clnb's annual meeting closo on Tuesday next. c Grande*, the Merriwee—Armada colt, owned bv the Wanganni sportsman, Mr. R. Vareile—has wintered well, and is now a shapely horse. He is improving fast, and should not ba long in tho maiden class. The Doncaster St. Legor will this year be run on September 13. Now that Sunstar has broken down, King William will probably start a good favourite. Judging by th? rush to securo stabling accommodation in Marton, tho Marton Jockey Club's spring meeting promises to be a record fixture. One stable with forty loose-boxes has already let the wholo of them, and the proprietor has had to refuse many requests for boxes. So far nn date has' been fixed for the shipping nf North-East and St. Gate to Sydney, but it will probably be early next month. In any case, the pair are not likely to bo seen out at Marton. The New Zealand horses. Genius and Aphaea, aro engaged at the Rosehill races in Sydney this afternoon. The form of Commodore at the Manawatu Hunt Club meeting, where he beat Flamingo—a subsequent winner at tho National meeting—must have considerably impressed Handicapper G. Morse as ho has set him to give weight to several winners over country in tho Hack Steeples at Marton. Maidi is no longer a member of J. Cameron's Fcilding team. Tho roan mare is now trained by her owner, and will bo given a final chance to distinguish herself at the Marton meeting, which opens on Wednesday week.
Platypus and ilerrie Rosa will both bo sent to Waikanao this season on a visit to tho imported horso Bozonian. Tho Wairarapa Hunt Club's steeploohaso meeting t:ikes place- on Thursday next. A capital lot of jumpers havo been entered for'tho principal events at I no Dannevirke Racing Club's meeting, and there ie suro to be a good deal .if interest in both tho steeplechaso and hurdles. Whimper, a ,dual winner at Wanganui on Thursday, is being kept in work by G. Laing until tho Morton and Dannevirke meetings'have been concluded. Tho old Wonderlaud gelding is galloping very freely just now. and should add further to his laurels in the near future. Jackpin, who several times last season showed himself to bo the possessor of considerable pace over short courses, has left M. Gardiner's Waverley stables. Tho big black gelding is to bo sold to wind up -a partnership. Lady Jean, a Now Zealand Cup candidate, who was gjven a run at the EgniontWanganui Hunt Club meeting, is well enough bred to both gallop fast and stay. She is by the defunct Kilcheran from Merry Go Round, who wa9 a full-sister to tho New Zealand Cup ,■ inner Grand Rapids. Mr. C. F. Vallance, master of the Wairarapa Hunt Club, has supported the forthcoming raoe meeting of that 1-oily in a liberal manner with his trio of huriiera Hill Lass, Oakley, and Nedra. Ewh of them are engaged in two rir.es.. After the poor showing .vhich he mode at Wanganui on Thursday, it is 'inlikely that the hunter Anchorage will be kept in work much longer. Ho is a (As nwXward animal, and if his Wanganui txhibition is tho best which he ; s <-apab!o of it is useless taking him to the Marlon meeting. MANAWATU R,C. REPORT.
