SUPREME COURT SESSIONS.
(Br TelecraDh—Press Association.! . Palmerston, August 21. The Supremo Court sittings opened today under the Chief Justice. True bills wero returned in each case.' Tho day was occupied in hearing a charge of assault with intent ayainst Cornelius Murphy, .Tames Jl'Kenzie, and Frederick Itichard Kinc-hant. The assault was alleged to havo been committed on Alfred Badcock, and to have arisen out of a row at the opening of a billiard room at Mata.roa. This, it was stated, was followed by three men attacking Badcock at his house with fists, boots, and a hammer, splintering his jaw, and inflicting other serious injuries. The defence was that it was Badcock who had had tho hammer, and Murphy had taken it from him, and hit him with his fist. There was a large amount of evidence, nearly everyone being accused of drunkenness, and the Chief Justice commented on the manner in which liquor bad been so freely obtained where there was apparentlv uo license. The Chief Justice summed up against accused, but the jury, after being locked up four hours to-night, disagreed. The Crown Prosecutor applied for a new trial.
