TROOPS FOR THE RAILWAYS
FRUITLESS CONFERENCE. FORCE OF 25,000 MEN AT ALDERSHOT 1 READINESS. DISORDERS THROUGHOUT BRITAIN.
Bj TolccraDh—Press Association— OoDyrlcbt (Rcc. August 17, 10.15 p.m.) London, August 17. ' Every available soldier at Aldershot is under orders lor service on tho railways. Men will be stationed along tho line.-, and the cavalry will be utilised at large stations to patrol the lines. Twenty-live thousand men aro ready to movo in a lew hours. Similar orders have been issued to the other military stations in England and Scotland. Several detachment's of troops havo arrived in London. Tho railwaymon at York decline to handle trains for the convcyanco of soldiers and polico. Tho general railway strike is not likely t) be commenced to-day. Mr. Buxton, President of the Board of Trade, following up yesterday's conference, desired to meet tho railwayman's executives. Tho latter acquiesced and aro coming to London to confer. Meanwhile sectional meetings of tho railway employees havo agreed to obey the call. The "Daily Mail"-states that at the conference the railway companies were asked to meet union officials half way, but' refused to do so. Only one-fourth of tho railwaymon are members of trades unions. Tho railwaymen have issued a manifesto demanding the samo opportunities of combination as possessed by other workers, and also that they shall have their wages and hours settled by their own union. Tlicy are determined to accept nothing less and declare that they will settle the job now onco and for all. Tho London newspapers are organising motor deliveries in the event of the failure of the railways.
