ASSAULTS ON LITTLE CHILDREN.
COURT REFERENCE. Further reference to assaults on little children was made yesterday morning, when Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., had before him the caso of a ina.n. in extenuation of whose offence it had been said I hat ho had previously borno a good character. "You are liable to six months' imprisonment," said his Worship, "or a penalty of .£2O. The nature of the offence is such that, even though you have not been before tho Court, that ijs not aa excuse. These matters of assaults upon little girls have been before the Court and public lately, and it is only the other day that similar matters—certainly moro serious than you are charged with—wero commented strongly upon in the Supreme Court. It is not a pleasant thing for tho Court to have to convict a man who has previously borne a good character, but assaults upon little children must bo put down. You will be convicted and sentenced to two months' imprisonment."
