The visit to Mastorton and the FortyMile Bush of Mr. W. i\ Massey, Leader of tho Opposition, has quickened interest, in political affairs, and caused a great deal of discussion. The, resolutions passed in Masterton and Pahiatua represent fairly accurately the new feeling which i 3 pervading these constituencies. It is rcmsidered unfortunate that two Opposition candidates should go to the poll. It seems, however, that this cannot be avoided. Tho joining of forces in the second ballot may have the desired effect. The. fortnightly meeting of Stonohenge Lodge. U.A.0.D.. was held last nipht, Bro. P. Corbctt, A.D., presiding over a very large attendance. Bro. Pickering reported that good progress was being made with the Royal Arch Chapter meetings. Five candidates were initiated into tho Order, and four proposed for membership. A challenge from tho Hibernians to play a. euchre tournament was accepted. Members of the choir of the Masterton Methodist Church wero entertained at an enjoyable "Social" last evening by (ho trustees of the church. Musical and other items were rendered. Supper wan also provided. Tho Masterton Parliamentary Debating Society met last evening, when'a discussion took place on Mr. J. C. Cooper's "Land Taxation Bill." At tho next rncfting of the society, Mr. H. C. L. Robinson will introduce an "Anti-Socialistic Bill." The monthly meeting of directors of the Workers' Mutual Benefit Building Society was held last night. Tho treasurer reported a credit balance in tho banfc of .£1659. The secretary reported that a sale and ballot, representing ,£6OO would lake place on August 21. ' Certain transfers of shares wero agreed to, and three new shares were allotted. A movement is being mado in the matter of erecting i> public, hall for social purposes at Kaitima. Mr. J. La Roche, an old identity of this town, died this afternoon after a protracted illness. He leaves a widow and family.
