An illustration of the far-reaching grasp of the finger-print system camo before tlio public to-day, when John Owen, alias Dorre, alias George Rowe, alias John Luc.v, appeared at the Police Court on a. charge of having, on April 21, 190G, at Moutoa, Foxton, attempted to murder Augustus Percy Easton. Five years ago the events precedent to the charge took place, in which it was alleged that Jolui Owen tried to murder Easton first by firing at him with a gun, and later by hitting him with an axe. Search was matlo for Owen, but ho disappeared entirely f"om human lien, leaving only as a memory with the police some finger-prints. A few weeks back a man named Rowe brought .himself under the notice of the police by disorderly conduct in Auckland, and was sentenced to three months' imprisonment. Ilis finger-prints were taken in tlio ordinary course, and sent on to tho depot, whero it was discovered that thsy were identical with tho prints of tho missing man Owen. Consequently, Rowo was this morning brought from gaol to have the charge of attempted murder brought against him. He was remanded for a week, and then the police will apply for a further ■ remand, in order that tho accused may appear at Foxton to stand his trial.
