THE TURF.

RACES AT RICCARTON. CONCLUDING DAY. STEEPLES WON BY SIR LETHE. BIG TOTALISATOR FIGURES. , (By. Telegraph—Press Association.! Christchurch, August 12. To-day the Canterbury Jockey Club brought to a close one of the most successful Grand .National meetings which it has yet held. The weather was glorious and, though a number of visitors to the city had departed, there, was still a very good attendance, and speculation was even ■more spirited than on Thursday, when a New Zealand record was established.; Today's investments amounted to ,£32,425, making ,£92,679 for tho meeting, as against .£60,632 last year, when bookmakers were licensed. The principal steeplechase of the day was disappointing by reason of the uuinber of falls,' but otherwise tho racing was nrst'-class, several of the finishes being particularly'close. None of tho jockeys whose mounts came down sustained serious injuries. Results:— UNITED HUNT CLUBS' STEEPLECHASE, of 100 sovs. About two miles and a half. 2 Mr. 11. Wiudleborn's ch. g. The C..T.C. were again very fcrtunato on Saturday, when the Graiid National meeting was brought to-a conclusion in perfect weather. The sun shone brightly, aud there was an absence of the keen easterly wind which is so prevalent at this time of the year. Big fields again faced the starter in all the events set down for decision, aud, en the whole, matters were disastrous for backers, as only one first favourite scored. The. attendance was well up to the thirdday standard for this meeting, Glcnmore, who wns having his third race over country, was made the favourite selection, in the United Hunt Clubs' Steeplechase. Others who were fancied by their connections were Kingsway and Wirihana. Sylvia Maid fell at the first fence, and Kingsway and Wirihana, led irom a bunched field, hut, by the time that the stand was reached, Glenmoro had jumped into the lead, with Wirihana. next. Down the back Kingsway fell, and Glenmore left Wirihana. Silver Blaze ond Oakley moved up at the. six furlongs, and, running across the bottom, the firstnamed joined ' Glenmcre. The latter jumped best, but his companion had too much pace, and won by half n dozeji lengths. Oakley was a poor third. Tho others were strung out for a long way. Hcathcote Handicap was won by Effort, after the finest finish of the meeting, lindwiuoil, Jvyltuni, and Bonny Glen—three well-backed runners—were unfortunate, at (he barrier, and failed to reach the leaders at any part. Sea Kin;; »w two lengths out from Effort at the end of a iurlong, aud the Trentliam mare was tho same distance in front of a bunched field. The latter division underwent several 'changes before tho straight was reached, where Effort colored Sea. King, and Incy silso put in a claim. In a fine finish tho two dashed over the line together, with liusylaml and rirebell next, and Nyland and Negative ut the head of tho others.

Doggerbank saw a very short price in tlie Hack Hurdles, but Cabins, another Auckland horse, who -was ridden by R. lhompson, went out in iront with 'him, jind, jumping very big, brought Doggor- ,!?,■ , own at . tho ,m ' !: ° f the course, lius left Sabiue with a long lead, but he tired badly. At tho turn Gaelic appeared to have the race won, but his bi<* weight slopped him, and Cardiff ami Passive both headed him in the rim from Hie last fence. Embrasure and Ito were the. uext to finish. Hoanaga was the only withdrawal from the Sydenham Hurdles. Although penalised some 161b., Continuance was made lavourite, with Windage next. Master Paul took charge at the start, with Contmuance, Windage, and St. Aidan in that order. Ho led to the mile, where St. Aidan made a faulty jump, and fell back, with half a mile to go, Continuance and Windage were-clear, o£.the,.qthers, but at ;tho last, fence. -Espartero-nnd Compass ran up to them. The quartet jumped the last fence -together, but in the run home (he light-weight easily held his own, and won Esnartero was well clear of Compass. Young, on Continuance, broke a leather at the last, fence,.and The Hover was pulled np, and was bleeding freely when he returned to tho birdcage. Espartero appeared to l>e the unlucky horns as ho was whipping the.field six furlongs from home. The owner of tho winner is reported to have won a big stake over the success of his horse. So pleased was lie. with Pritchard's handling of the Enroclydon Relding that he made him a present of £150. Sir Lethe put up a wonderful performance in the Lincoln Steeples by getting to the end of tho three-mile cour&o in finiin.' 58 l-ssee. After going half a mile Mr. Vallanco's bow purchase was out in front by himself, and jumping in perfect style, ho never allowed tho others to get wilhin striking distance, and won by nearly a furlong. Tho remainder found the pace too hot, and one by one all but the placed horses made mistakes. Dorando, who seems to be coming on with racing, got second money and Winiata third. Ribstone Pippin, who ran off at the kennels double the second, time, vas taken back,' and completed tho course. Corazou, who was favourite, was the first horse to fall, the sod wall at tho bottom of tho course proving his undoing. Englcstone was a slightly better favourite than Amaru in the Kedclilfs Handicap, and the former won from the two biggest outsiders in the race. Amaru was unlucky, and several times her ridor was disappoint?.! when trying for an opening. Ahuapai made the running just ahead of Wedge, until well into the straight, where the. pair were done with, and Eaglestone, coming on, won nicely. This was F. D. Jones's only winning ride at the meeting. An outsider—Czar Kolohol—won the Sclwyn Handicap after a very pretty race. Boanerges, with list. 131b. on his back, was made favourite, but the r.i.co was a good betting one, and the favourite would have paid quite a good price. He, Countermine, and Alexis, on tho inside, all began smartly, but tho first-named ran on by himself. He maintained his advantage until well down the straight, when the weight told its. tale. The position now became exceedingly interesting, several horses appearing to possess equal chances. Toanga and All Guns were especially prominent. Czar Kolohol swept up on" tho outside and beat Expansion comfortably, while All Guns was clew up third. > Shillelagh and Miharo carried the bulk of the investments in the Hunters' Plate, but Hawick won very easily at. the fiuish. The latter paid a good dividend, and was very well handled by his rider, who kept Kim in behind tho leaders till well down tho straight, and then came out, aijfl won easily. Ha wn.s ridden in a 2-stone siddlc , , and during the race ho lost ono of Ilia irons. His backers bad a very close call, for his rider was just able to tip tho beam and no more.
