/ FORTNIGHTLY BUSINESS. REPORTS A\D RECOMMENDATIONS. The fortnightly meeting of Uio City Council was iield last evening. The Mayor presided, and the councillors present were: Councillors J. Smith, F. Cohen, G. Frost, J. Trevor, A. R. Atldnson, J. Godber, L. M'Kenzie, W. H. P. Barber, J. E. Fitzgerald, J. Fuller, jun., A. H. Ilindmarsh, IT. .M'la-ron, 31.P.. 0. W. Shirtoliff, K. Fletcher, and Dr. R. A. Cameron. FINANCE AND PROPERTY. Tho Finance and Property Oommjttce recommended ••— That the City Engineer bn authorised to alter the position of Bell Road at the lon of Bidwill Street, and also that (ho proposed site for the high-level reservoir on tho Towu Be.lt, off Bell Road, be approved. That the claim of a widow of a late corporation employee for compensation on account of tho death of her husband, whose death is alleged to have been caused by an accident, be defouded. That a proposal for tho erection of a refreshment room on the Town Belt, Oriental Bay be not entertained. That tho petitioners for'- the erection of a band rotunda at Oriental Parade bo informed that the council cannot erect one at present. ' That tenders bs called for the purchase of a property recently acquired in connection with the Wadestown tramway. Tho report was adopted. TRAMWAYS COMMITTEE.;. The Pow.er Station and Tramways Committee recommended: — That the report of the electrical engineer iii connection with the opening of the tramway lino between Willis Street and the General Post Office bo adopted, with the following substitution, viz.;— The Brooklyn service to be extended to the Post Office, and a Id. fare established on this route botween ■Wordsworth Street and the Post Office. (This, said the report, would not interfere with the present concession ticket between Brooklyn and Manners Street.) That the application of a firm for the return of a deposit lodged for specifications, etc., supplied in connection with a corporation contract, for which such, firm did not tender, bo not granted. That a penalty be imposed in connection with the late dehvory of certain goods contracted to be supplied to the tramways department. The report was adopted. SUBURBAN DISTRICTS COMMITTEE. Tho Outlying Districts Committee recommended as follows:— That a notice- bo served on tho owner of a building pneroachinp; on tho road reservation at Cinlders Terrace to remove such encroachment within one month. That consent be given to the proposed right-of-way off Roscce Street, Wadestown, subject to the conditions imposed by the city engineer. That notices bo served on the owners of footbridges over the Island Bay stream to the effect that the same must not Iμ used for cart traffic. — That the council approve the proposal for the construction ot a road oft Onepu Road, as recommended by tno city engineer, provided the owner pays the cost ot labour in extending 'the necessary water mains along tho street, and that tho footways arc asphalted to full width. That the petitioners for tho construction of a footpath below the level of Guilders. Terrace Iμ informed that tho cQiincil could not seo its way to havo this work carried .sut. The committee also reported that they had been waited on by a deputation from tho Haiaitai Ratepayers' Association, who ajked that the council frame a by-lnw providing that in all future subdivisions in tho suburbs the frontage for each building section be not less than 40 feet. The committee recommend that the matter, l>e referred to,the By-laws Committee to draft a by-law accordingly. The report was adopted. ~ BY-LAWS. COMMITTEE. The following clause in the report of the By-laws Committee was referred again to the sub-committee:—"That the council dispense with the requirement of the city by-law regarding side courts' on the one «do of the proposed Picture Theatre at Clydo Quay, applied for by Mr. W. Fielding, awl that permission bo granted for tho erection of such theatre, subject to the conditions fixed by the city engineer." MISCELLANEOUS. '.. Notice is to Ixs served on Messrs. Mace and Nicholson, calling upon them to take steps to prevent tho metal from their q;mrrv finding its wny into the stream, and thus blocking tho fculvcrt at the abattoir. Tho city engineer was authorised to carry out some additional protective works at the end of tho culvert at tho municipal abattoir, at an estimated cost of ,£2O.
