AGAIN THE ROSTER.

. SUGGESTIONS AND ASSURANCES. Some anxiety, dispelled by subsequent assurances from the Mayoral Chair, was evinced by the City Council last evening when the Mayor moved tho adoption of a time-tablo drafted by the tramway officers, and submitted to tho council for approval as a basis upon which to .design the now roster. The adoption of the timetable, explained the Mayor, would allow the tramway officers to make a start upon, tha roster, which would tako about it month to get out. Councillors would remember that this w'as a matter connected with the dispute with the tramwayraen. The union had prepared a roster, which had been submitted to the Tramways Committee. The council had since decided that tho Tramways Engineer should re- ' port upon a time-table and rostor. The basis of the Engineer's report was a new, ' time-table providing for a different traffic schedule during the rush hours—as, for example, a seven and a half-minute service for the convenience of tha residents of Hataitai and Kilbirnie, instead of a I ten-minuto soryica. When the Engineer has drafted his roster, the report,, as a whole would be submitted to the council i'rtr review. Councillor M'Laren objected to the principle of adopting a report such as this by. sections. He did not want the position to be prejudiced in. any way. After a .consultation with the Mayor, Mr.' Stuart Richardson, Tramways Engineer, explained the position. As a matter of convenience, and to expedite the drafting of tho report, it was decided that tho time-table which was to form the structural basis of the new roster should be tentatively agreed to. Siibsequently the report as a whole would be brought <lown, and tho council might then accept or reject it as might bo thought fit.. . Tho Mayor pointed out that ho wonld nok be a party to any actions which would preclude the union from the same privileges of. criticism as. regarded tho council's roster, as were accorded the council by the union with regard to.tho latter's There was no further objection, and the time-table was authorised.
