OBITUARY.

MR. FREDERICK 13RADEV, J.r. The death occurred yesterday, after « lons illnes?, of Mr. Frederick* Bradey, J. P., tho well-known I'ahnuhinui shecpfarmer, and n gentleman who up till a few years ago took a very active part iu the Management of local anil county affairs. In April last ho sustained a paralytic stroke, From which he never renliy recovered. Mr. Biad?y was born in London in 1533, nnd arrived with his parents in the ■.shin Adclnidc in 1840, liavin? as passengers tho lato Mr. T. W. M'Kenzie, Mr. J. J. Taino, and other well-known citizens, many of whom have passed over, to the great majority. In 18U ho returned to England with his father, but camo back again the next year. In ISK tho Victorian gqldfields lured him to Australia, but within two years ho was back again, and this time he took up a block of land in tho Paliautanui-Porirua district, and settled down as a sheep-farmer. Being a very active man. Mr. Bradey was not content to sit down and watch the wool grow. lie was nu enthusiastic volunteer, and became captain of the Paliautamii Volunteers in 1877, after five years' service. Ho was for a. time president of tho defunct Wellington A. and P. Association, was a Commissioner of the Peace, served on the Wellington Education Board (of which body ho became chairman); was chairman of the Ilutt County Council; represented that body on tho Wellington Ilarbour Board, and for several years served oir tho Bonevolent Trustees Board, the Technical School Board, the Charitable Aid Board, and the Hospital Board. In 1898' ho was asked to contest the Otaki ?eat in Parliament, but lie declined tho honour, having little ambition for work in the field of politics. The deceased was a man who always lent a willing hand when it was wanted, and was ever held in tho highest regard. Mr. Bradey leaves a widow and four laughters (Mesdames C. A. Baker, Eastbourne; J. Varnham, Wellington; E. G. Boss, Hutt; arid Miss Mary Bradey), and ivo sons (Messrs. Alfred, Frederick, Sharks, Edward, and William Bradey). \ll tho sons are settlers in Pahautanui. fhero are 28' grandchildren and threo jreat-grandchildren. The interment will take place at Pahautanui.

CAPTAIN BENDALL. Another old resident of Wellington died yesterday in the person of Captain Bendall, who for many years has acted as Lloyd's surveyor in Wellington. Captain Bendall had been'suffering for sonic tinio from the effects of a chill, which ho could not shake off, sustained whilst engaged in salvage operations. The deceased arrived in New Zealand in 18G2, bringing out diggers to the Otago rush in the little vessel The Three Sisters, which ho both sailed and owned. Shortly after his arrival he was appointed harbourmaster at Kiverton, which post he resigned to take command of tho Star of the South, which'plied up and down the New Zoaland coast during the troublous days of the Maori War. On one occasion he was ordered lv> stand by to take the residents of Napier to sea in case the Hau Haus descended on the settlement.. He was engaged on the coast for many years,' and when he eventually settled in Wellington he was appointed pilot to tho Panama :s'team Ship Company, , aud on occasions relieved the late Captain Fairchild in command of the Government steamers Hinemoa. and Stella. As marine surveyor to the Wellington Underwriters' Association he was well known among the shipping fraternity and many "a lame duck" limping into port after a fierce, hout.irith .the elements has been honoured, with the attentions of tiic eagleeyed old navigator. He was alert and straightforward even to abruptness, and never minced words when there was work to be done. When the Koranui struck tho Beef Barrels and went , down in the French Pass -with■ .£25,(100 worth of gold on board, Captain Bendall at once secured the services of the steamer Mana, divers and plant and steamed awaj , across the Strait to save the gold before tho rushing currents of those dangerous waters made the task impossible. The whole fivo boxes of £01(1 were secured by the divers (each containing ,£SOOO worth of bullion), and back-came the little Mana the same day arriving at midnight. Not taking any risks Captain Bendall at once knocked up tho bank's manager, and had the chests placed in the vaults in order that, he could sleep sound after his" good work. Captain.Bendall's golden wedding was to have been celebrated nest month. He is survived by his widow and his daughters, Mesdames J. M. King, G. Robison (Wellington), and C. Cornford (Napier), and.Mrs. H. E. Richards (Seatoun); also his sons, Messrs. W. E. 'Bendall (Palmerston North), Bernard Bendall (San Fran-c,is,c,ol-»n'l O. It. Bendall and 11. T. Bendall (Wellington).

MRS. H. A. DEMPSEY. Mrs. Harriett Ann Dempsey, who has been a repdent of Wellington since 1857, died at the residence of her son-in-law, 8j Brougham Street, on Monday. Her husband, who died twenty years ago, was in business in Willis Street for some years. She leaves a family of one son Mr. W. H. JJempsey, postmaster at Pahiatua), and, one daughter (Mrs J B Young, of Wellington). " '
