The strike is due to the Port-of London Authority's employees receiving a rise to sovenponcu an hour. Tho shipping companies' employees, who' long received tovenpeiice, aro now claiming an additional penuy. Tliu union officials did not dosiro a. strike, but tho rank and file repudiated tho officials' promise to submit tho matter to arbitration. The Rippingham Grange, with five hundred emigrants for Australia, duo to sail on Thursday, is unable to completo her I loading. The shipowners aro ready to submit the dispute to arbitration. CONFERENCE TO BE HELD. (Eec. August 3, 9.25 p.m.) London, August 3. At a meeting of. dockers, Mr. Ben Tillet announced that a Strike Committee for tho Port of London was being formed, embracing overy section of workers. It would co-operato with t'he National Federation of Transport Workers, and a conference between employers and the men will bo held to-morrow. DOCKERS' STRIKE IN ST.' PETERS-, JiUKG. (Rec. August 3, 11.25 p.m.) St. Petersburg, August 3. Twelve thousand dockers have struck, throwing idle two-thirds of I'ho shipping. THE SUGAR STRIKE. NINE MEN ARRESTED. Brisbane, August 3. Nine men, including a striko organiser, havo been arrested ill connection with the disturbance at Childers, where sugar work- ■ ers oil strike wrecked the quarters occupied by a number of frco labourers. Three men havp been arrested at Cairns as tho outcome of a strikers' demonstration over the waterside workers enforcing the decision not to handle non-union sugar. WARNED OFF. (Rec. August 3, 0.25 p.m.) Sydney, August 3. A largo number of men who replied to an advertisement for men to work in tho Queensland sugar mills to-day were addressed by Mr. Ryland, a Labour member of tho. Queensland Assembly, who urged tho men not to go. The crowd then dispersed. SEAMEN'S INTERESTS. (Rec. August 4, 0.35 a.m.) Sydney, August 3. Tho general secretary of- tho Federated Seamen's Union has goue to Queensland to watch the interests of members, and to take charge of their aspect of the sugar strike. ROYAL COMMISSION SUGGESTED. (Rec. August i, 0.35 a.m.) Melbourne, August 3. The Acting-Prime Minister, Mr. Hughes, states that ho is not unfavourable to tho appointment of a Royal Commission to inquire into tho sugar industry, with special reference to the Queenslaud trouble. The district branch oi the Amalgamated Society of Engineers has presented all the city firms and the State Railway Commissioners with a demand for an increase in pay of a shilling a day. NEW SOUTH WALES STRIKES. Sydney, August 3. The Lithgow , striko continues, pending a meotiug of tho Arbitration Board.
Tho cane-cutters' strike at Maclean has ended, the company having granted the men's demands. WHAEF LABOURERS' HOUES. Melbourne, August 3. The new agreement between the Wharf Labourers' Union and tho Steamship Owners' Federation is now in operation. It reduces the working hours from fortyeight to forty-soven weekly, with extra pay for work in meal-time, and overtime after midday on Saturday. HOB ART CARTERS STILL OUT. Hobart, August 3. Tho carters' strike continues. The men will meet to-day to consider concessions offered by tho employers. CANADIAN MINING STRIKE. Vancouver, August 2. The coal-minors at Fernie favour resuming work, after soveral months , strike for higher wages. Mining has been ssriously hampered during the strike.
