A PLEASANT GATHERING.
On- Wednesday evening" Gbdlio'r's Cafe' was the scene of a very pleasant aild enjoyable gathering. The occasion was a function held by members of the Colonial Mutual Lifo Assurance Society, Limited, to celebrate the winning of a gold medal given by the Hon. Agar Wynne, a director at principal office in Melbourne, for the best results throughout Australasia during the half-year ended June. Mr. P. D. Leslie (resident secretary for New Zealand) presided, and opportunity was alfo taken of presenting a medal and prizes won in competition between the various divisions of the society in New Zealand from January to.June. Mr. Leslie, in piesenting tlie several trophies, spoke very, feelingly of tho great, pleasure ho felt at tlie splendid work achieved by Mr. E. , L. Burns and his fine band of agents. In handing roll of honour certificates for exceptional work done to Mr. E. ]). Buchanan and Mr. H. Feinhols, representatives of the society at Napier and Christchureh respectively, Mr. Leslio ' extended hearty congratulations on their fine performances. Mr. Burnee was presented with a very handsome tea and coffee service and oak tray for best divisional results in New Zealand, also with I fine set of carvers and a roll of honour certificate and gold medal, won by Mr. A. van der Burnh (the society's, representative at the Hutt), who was unable to be present. Speeches were delivered by Mr. H. H. Rouse (who has been acting-resident secretary in Mr. Leslie's absence on his recent "visit to Melbourne) and Mr. E. T. Wiay, chief superintendent of the industrial department for New Zealand. Messrs. Burnes, Feinhols, and Buchanan suitably responded. The musical programme was mainly supplied by members of the staff, Messrs. Bnrston, J. AV. Foster, Crump. AVrigh't, T. R. Foster, Laurenson, and Clark rendering songs in very good style, and Mr. Blick. who accompanied most successfully, also gave vocal items. Mr. F. AV. AVebb gave a particularly pleasing clarinet solo, and Messrs. Wolfe, Pago and Nicholls gave recitations. Altogether a very pleasant evening was spent.
