Mr. Barker occupied the chair, and elocutionary, vocal,- and instrumental items were contributed by Mrs. Hall,' Mi«s' Nimmo, Messrs. Marshall, Yates, Henderson Galland Go der, and Barber. Mr. Ga and, on behalf of tho residents and settlors of Moutoa, presented Mr. Yoiin* with a handsome set of ebonv brushes", suitably inscribed, and Mrs. Young with a handsome silver salad bowl. Tlw Hcv. Mr. J. A. M'Kenzio presided at the weekly meeting of the local Literary and Debating Society on Tue*. day evening in the Druids' Hall, when an oratorical .competition was held. There was a disappointing number of entrants, and Mrs. Murdoch was an easy first. The winner s oration was on "Universal Sufirnge, and was a very good effort indeed. A number of subjects, were then selected by the committee and' handed round. Each lender was allowed five minutes speech, and tho subject was then thrown open for discussion, the first speaker having tho privilege of a threeminutes' reply. Mr. M'Ken' zie. _ From a debating point of view the evening was one of tho most cntortnininz and interesting on this year's syllabus.
