A writer in an old American building magazine says:—"l discovered many years ago that wood could be made to last longer than iron in the ground. 1 would •as soon have poplar, bas--wood, or ash as any other kind of timber for fence posts. 1 have taken out' bass-wood posls after, lliey have been set' for seven years, ami found them as sMind when 'taken out as when lir.st put in (he ground. Time and weather corned to have no effect oil them. Tho >;•>••'.•, can be prepared for a cent, or two each. This is tho rcCipe: Take boiled linseed oil, and stir in pulverised coal to (he consistency or paint."
