ATHLETIC SPORTS.
. RUGBY FOOTBALL. WELLINGTON RUGBY UNION, Tho Wellington Rugby Union met last night. There were present; Messrs. S. Brown (chairman), J. Sweeney, E. Halos, W. Perry, J. Bums, E. Littlo, and W. Hardham. • The Auckland Union telegraphed that they had decided to play Wellington on September 9. This has been approved by Wellington. Applicants for matches from Wairarapa and Marlborough were held over till next meeting. Tho Wairarapa Union wrote ■ that it would be pleased to accept August .5 for, the junior representative match. They were arranging for the match to bo played at Carterton. The Petono Club objected to two boys named Winters and Horton playing against them for Athletic . fifth. Tho ■matter is to be inquired into. Tho Upper Hutt Club wrote stating that they wished to change their colours. They played in black jerseys with a yellow band around them, and the band was often torn off,' besides which the players disliked the colours. If was decided to ask them to make a suggestion as to new colours. '
The headmaster of the Pctqne District High School informed the union, that he was unable to enter a .team for a sixth class competition. The Appointment Board reported that the Referees' Association objected to their members signing the mutual agreement provided for in the rules of the club contests. It was decided to write to the Referees' Association asking them under what rule they had. refused to allow a member to sign the agreement.
THE "SPORT" WHO HAD THE /. WHISTLE. UNUSUAL EPISODE. There was\an unusual occurrence at a football match recently,' played at the Hutt. The particulars are contained m the following letter from Mr. P. Martin, the referee, to the Wellington RugbyUnion :— "1 hare to report that I had to stop the game Hutt v. Melroso, fifth class, while tnere was still fifteen minutes to go in the second spell. I had to lake this course, owing to.one of the spectators continually blowing- a whistle whenever the -Melrose men got a passing or dribbling rush on, or any of them looked like'.scoring. -I had to stop the game in the first spell, and ask them not to blow the .whistle'as it was spoiling' the Kame.'\l also informed them that if it happened again 1 should stop the game, and leave the field, and report- to the W.R.F.U. Well, sir, I had to stop the game in the second' spell. The Hutt team were-then three points to nil." Last night the union decided to write to the„-Hutt, Club stating that if such a thing occurred again they would authorise all-- their matches to be played in the city. It was also decided that the match should be played again. MAORIS DEFEAT HASTINGS. (By TeleeraDh-Fress Association.) Hastings, July 26. \ The Native football team to-day defeatid the Hastings Sub-Union by three points—an unconverted try—to nil, after a game of a very clean nature.
