KARORI AFFAIRS.

CARE OF STREETS. The Karori Borough Counc" met last evening, the, Mayor (Mr. C. Cathie) presiding. Also present were: Councillors W. T. Hildreth, W. G. Bradnock, J. H. Frost, A. Hamilton, E. J. Sta.nden, J. T. Horn, W. 11. Ivimnio, E. Anderson, and B. H. fi. Burn. The Wellington City Council wrote, stating that an application had been received from Mr. T. Ward to have tiir> Evelyn Estate connected up with the city drainage system. It was stated Mr. Ward had applied, about twelve months previously, to the Karori Borough Council to have his property drained, the council declining to undertake tho work. Mr. Ward had now made direct application to the City Council. The matter was referred to the Works Committee, which body was empowered to confer with the city officials on all aspects of the question.

Reporting on the condition of the streets on the Standen Estate, the Borough Engineer stated that, since the streets had been taken over in April, 1908, a' sum of .£92 lGs. Id. had been expended upon them, largely in the removal of slips, which were of constant occurrence. The road formations were in good order, but the footpiths needed constant, attention. The engineer stated, in reply to a question, that the sum named had been expended on the estate, in addition to the sum of £Ho paid by tho original owners of the estate when it was taken over by the council. In discussion it was stated that the sum of .£235 was paid in consideration of imperfections in the streets when they were taken over. In this view the Mayor concurred. Eventually it was agreed that the secretary of the Standen Estate Company should be written to, and informed that the council admitted having received a certain sum of monev. on condition that it took over the streets in question. This the council had done, and it would expend the money as it thought it necessary to do so.
