THE "DAILY JiAIL" CONTEST. By Telecrapa—Press Aseociation-Oopyrient London, July 23. Seventeen aeroplanes completed the first stage of the Brcoklauds to Heudon (light for the "Daily Jlail" prize. Jl. Vcdrines, the French aviator, made the quickest time, M. Beaumont being second. Lieutenant Porte, a naval aviator, fell 30ft., his machine being wrecked. Lieutenant Porto was unhurt. An aviator named Kemp fell 50ft. through the wing of his machine being crumpled. Kemp had a miraculous oscape. CONDITIONS OF THE FLIGHT. The regulations for the control of the "Daily Mail" air contest set out that the proprietors of tho "Daily Jlail" have offered the sum of ,£IO,OOO to be awarded to the aviator who shall have completed a prescribed circuit of approximately 1000 miles in an aeroplane flight in tho shortest time within the appointed dates, th'e award to be made hy the Royal Aero Club in conjunction with the directors of ihe "Daily Jlail."

.The contest, is open to competitors of any nationality holding an aviator's certificate issued by tho International Aeronautical Federation, and duly entered on tho competition register of the Royal Aero Club.

Aviators entering for the contest had to pay an entrance fee of *£100 to cover expenses, no part of this sum, however, going to the proprietors of the "Daily Mail." The competitors are compelled to spend a certain number of hours on tho ground at each stopping place. Repairs to aeroplanes within certain limits are allowed, and stoppages en route are not prohibited. The route of the flight with the distanco in each section is as 'follows:— Miles. Brooklands- to Ilcndon 20 Hendon to Harrogate 182 Harrogate to Newcastle (13 Ncwcastlo to Edinburgh !)!)
