INCREASED TRAM FARES.
INDIGNATION MEETING. Citizens who find the prospect of a fifty per cent, increase in tram lares clistasteiul nre invited to attend an indignation meeting to be held nt the Town Jiall on Monttay evening, at 8 o'clock. The intention is to organise a united protest against Government meddling with local tramway management as represented in the recent issue of draft tramway regulations. It is pointed out that the enforcement of the regulations would mean a iitty per cent, increase in fares, and that citizens, and not the Government, arc responsible for the money which has been epent on tramways. Citizens aro therefore invited to sco to it that the 'management remains in tho hands of locally-clcctcd representative;. Both ladies anil gentlemen arc invited to attend. The chair will bo taken by Councillor J. Smith (ActingMayor), delegates from other tramwnv districts will ntltlrcss the meeting, and local members of Parliament will also take part. The doors will bo opened at 715 p.m., and prior to the commencement of the principal business of the evening the city organist will play selections on the grand organ.
The lato Mr. Honry Hnyman, ono of the partners in the firm of P. Hayman and Company, has provided in his will a tangiblo recognition of the services of his employees. All members of the New Zealand staff with ten years' forvice to their credit will receive gratuities of .£2O, and those of 20 yfiirs' service and upwards will receive .CSO. The sneak tliief has been ninking his presonca felt at the Garrison Hall during the, medical examination of the youths for the new citizen army this wevk. Complaints have been made by several youths of the loss of valuables fn.ii! tlio pockets of their coats mid waistcoats, which they have to take off and leave in one room while they go up for medical examination in another room. One young man was relieved of a watch and chain ami two medals, and on previous occasions other valuables have been stolen. Steps arc being taken to prevent the recurrence of these annoriii" thefts. Why is it that the N.Z. Express Co., Ltd., can ofTcr such cheap rates for parcel delivery? Simply this: The number eent by them being so verv large, the cost of single parcels is reduced to n minimum. The Company sends parcels, lnrge or small, to any address, and delivery is always prompt—Adyt. A memorial cross has just been erected at Moariington-on-Wyo to the memory of the late Kev. Francis E. W. Wilinot, Rector of the parish, who died in January last. It is a facsimile of tho famous Morwenstow Cornis)i cross, and is made in the glittering grey Cornish granite.
